Post subject:  [S&C] Feb/Mar Open Challenge

Welcome to the Bi-monthly Sculpting and Converting challenge. This is an entirely open challenge so the subject matter will fall under....

Anything you like!

(As long as it is Middle-earth related!)

Image

In this challenge you have several options to take part:
- Sculpt from scratch (starting with or without armature/metal wire/...)
- Convert an existing miniature (to a new or another character or race/region, to change it's situation, rank, pose, wargear, ...)
You may sculpt/convert more than one character should you choose to do so but please bear in mind only 4 finished pictures can be submit for the vote.
Only one entry per person per challenge. So choose carefully!

2. To enter the Sculpting & Converting Challenge, the miniature you are converting must not be converted nor painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-converted'.
Re-converting an already converted miniature is NOT allowed!!
When sculpting from scratch, you must picture proof this with your blank armature/metal wire/... as well as a work-in-progress-picture as valid proof.
All "proof-pictures" MUST either have the announcement-screen of the running challenge in it's background, or contain a small note with the announced theme and date written on.

3. You may join the Sculpting & Converting Challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of your completed work by midnight GMT of MARCH 31ST 2015 . WIP images are welcomed and encouraged.
You are allowed to use any sort of sculpting epoxy, as well as scratch build materials (such as metal wire, plasticard, rivets, chains, ...).
You are allowed to use parts from other miniatures (such as weapons, heads, banners, arms, horses, ...).
Your final work must stay UNPAINTED and ideally contain 4 pictures; showing FRONT, BACK, LEFT and RIGHT side. Final pictures MUST NOT be submitted using the attachment format. If you want them in the voting poll then please link them across from an image hosting site such as photobucket or imageshack. If you do not know how to do this, PM a moderator.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed sculpts/conversions. Votes should be cast not simply on sculpting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of techniques, artist improvement, originality etc. There is no prize available for the winners of this challenge, the challenge is solely for community participation and as an incentive for people to improve their sculpting skills and to encourage creativity onto their shelves.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next Sculpting & Converting Challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive challenges.

I have a question. What is the best material for making an armature? I've noticed people using wire of sorts, but is there something else that's suitable? If there's a better place to ask this sort of question, please point me in the right direction.

I thought of a great idea, although it's rather ambitious for me seeing as I've never scratch built anything. Thanks in advance!

You can use whatever you like as an armature. Most people use wire because you can bend it into the desired position. But you could use wood, or plastic, basically anything that is firm enough to provide a solid base from which to build the putty up from.

I will get things rolling here.
I have seen the "unreleased Orc Drummer" model a couple times now and I always end up wanting a new orc drummer but not at unreleased prices. So I made one. I do have the released drummer, but this is still cool to me.

Some WIP shots; I use a jewelers saw, allows more precision cuts, like leaving the armor on the shoulder so I can just rotate the arm is very helpful.

The end result. I cut a piece of pencil to use as the armature for the drum. I use green stuff and Apoxie sculpt (not as tacky but cures very hard).

Here's my entry. I'm going to try to finish it before the end of February for the painting challenge but if it's not complete, then I'll paint something else and work on more details.

The Witch-king on Fellbeast:

This is still eligable right? The head is an extra from the plastic Winged Nazgul set. Don't want it to go to waste.

I might enter a Thorin I'm tweaking at the moment, if it turns out alright.

For the record, sculpting chainmail is really tedious!

I didnt see this thread, already converted some of my Morannons, nothing major mostly just weapon swaps. I'd like to suggest this for next month if possible - get people some experience re-posing models.

I thought it might be time for a comeback here so I decided to join with a conversion project to distract me a bit from other things in my life!

I'm trying to convert an Isengardscout into a mordor uruk hai ( I had the idea after watching these great videos https://www.youtube.com/user/GenerationShift92

I started this morning and the thing is coming along nicely already:

@halauas: That there is some beautiful armour work. How did you get the chain to set without it bending out of shape?

Well I finished up this Armoured Azog. Unfortunately I cannot find my proof picture anywhere so I have in effect disqualified myself. But here it is nonetheless:

Considering the first time you could have seen Azog like this is December, and even at a quick pace you would have just got all your parts and pictures by January to start. So even if you intended to cheat it would have only been by a month. I think we know you didn't cheat though. I think you should allow yourself this one time.
Bilbo will vouch for you, though nobody in Laketown knows Bilbo at all so his word is worth about as much as an old tapestry, but we at The One Ring can vouch for your word.
