Post subject:  [S&C] Jun/Jul Challenge "The Forces of Good"

Welcome to the Bi-monthly Sculpting and Converting challenge. This time the subject matter will fall under....

Image[/center]

In this challenge you have several options to take part:
- Sculpt from scratch (starting with or without armature/metal wire/...)
- Convert an existing miniature (to a new or another character or race/region, to change it's situation, rank, pose, wargear, ...)
You may sculpt/convert more than one character should you choose to do so but please bear in mind only 4 finished pictures can be submit for the vote.
Only one entry per person per challenge. So choose carefully!

2. To enter the Sculpting & Converting Challenge, the miniature you are converting must not be converted nor painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-converted'.
Re-converting an already converted miniature is NOT allowed!!
When sculpting from scratch, you must picture proof this with your blank armature/metal wire/... as well as a work-in-progress-picture as valid proof.
All "proof-pictures" MUST either have the announcement-screen of the running challenge in it's background, or contain a small note with the announced theme and date written on.

3. You may join the Sculpting & Converting Challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of your completed work by midnight GMT of JULY 31ST 2014 . WIP images are welcomed and encouraged.
You are allowed to use any sort of sculpting epoxy, as well as scratch build materials (such as metal wire, plasticard, rivets, chains, ...).
You are allowed to use parts from other miniatures (such as weapons, heads, banners, arms, horses, ...).
Your final work must stay UNPAINTED and ideally contain 4 pictures; showing FRONT, BACK, LEFT and RIGHT side.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed sculpts/conversions. Votes should be cast not simply on sculpting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of techniques, artist improvement, originality etc. There is no prize available for the winners of this challenge, the challenge is solely for community participation and as an incentive for people to improve their sculpting skills and to encourage creativity onto their shelves.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next Sculpting & Converting Challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive challenges.

I would encourage all entrants to utilise a photo host website (such as photobucket) and link your pictures across. It is very simple. The attachment facility is really for documents. It also makes the lives of the mods much easier when compiling the voting threads. Cheers

Thank you very much Dave! :yay:

Here is the first WiP part of my entry, it will be a four part model. Anyone a suggestion what it could be? (Tip: Inspired by a drawing of John Howe in the Arts & Desing book of An unexpected journey)

I know it isn't the blank wire, but I started on sunday evening with the armature, so I didn't have to opportunity to do a proof picture then. I could show a WiP picture at an earlier state though... I hope it is OK, if not, I would start again.

Cheers,
Bennet

Edit: I don't know why it isn't turned, sorry for that...

Why did you put the spoiler there! I knew the answer but now it doesn't count anymore... BTW Thorins Karte is german for Thorin's map, in case anyone is wondering.

Here's my entry if I get them done. The paint will be stripped from them all first. I hope that's okay?

Thanks! Well, I decided after all to do a boar rider, so I cut the boar abart and bent the wire in a jumping position. You can also see the armature of the rider:

Awww.. would have loved to see the boar cart! But the rider sounds interesting nevertheless. I'm excited to see the result of this!

@ Son of Fundin: I expected the hunting of the Boar of Everholt, with King Folca and retinue hunting. This idea also sounds great though! :)

I hope I can participate in the competition this time!

Ah goody, I've just started on an Arnor Royal Guard. Maybe I'll enter him.

Haha, that is fantastic! :D
I only envisioned King Folca slightly different though. ;)

Well, not nearly as exciting as a boar (which is fantastic by the way) but here's the progress on the high elf spearmen and archers.

The archers are pretty much done (not really conversions) with just the arrow tips needing sharpening; the spearmen require drastic shoulder surgery with greenstuff.

Oh, and the ones that got left behind...

Once again though, this is only a very small effort compared to that boar. You have an amazing talent sir.

Nice work grunge :) I take it this is Beorn or a Beorning?

I think your technique uses the sharp part of a blade quite a bit if I guess right, maybe you would be more suited to using sculpy or fimo instead of green stuff? You should pick up a cone/clay shaper so you don't get fingerprint on your axe - I have had the exact same problem.

I think I'll definitely be voting for the Dunlending Berzerker.

Wow, there are very nice entrys this month, great work guys!

@abcdefg: I really like the effort you've done on the archers, nice details added! The spearmen look nice as well, I am looking forward to the finished conversions! 8) And in my opinion everyone overrates sculpting from scratch, with such conversions it shouldn't be hard for you, you just need to try it!

@Grungehog: Nice to see you back! A nice model, I like it a lot. :yay: But as Hodush said you could use a clay sharper to prevent finger prints. I would apply two thin layers of putty on both sides of the axe, than you can smooth these and add the cutting edge...

@King Ondoher: Well, voting for the berserker should be quite hard, he was entered in the last month's challenge... I like your arnor gard as well, very effective conversions! I think they suit the look of Arvedui very good!
