Post subject:  Heroic/Epic Actions Summarized or Streamlined?

Hey fellow WotR enthusiasts,

I played a game this past weekend after a looooooong hiatus. (over a year?)

Besides general rustiness with the rules, I found the Heroic/Epic actions surprisingly confuscating.

Does anyone have a elegant summary or breakdown sorting out sequences and priorities?

Let me try to recapture my confusion...

1) I have priority. But it's clear we both want to seize a piece of terrain.

2) Per the rules, the player with priority can pass on declaring Heroic/Epic actions until the other player commits. So I pass.

3) He declares he'll be making (unspecified) heroic action(s)

4) Now that he's committed, I'm forced to commit

5) The we alternate, naming heroes/epic heroes to take actions.

6) When it's clear that our heroes are making Epic Moves to claim the same terrain, we dice off to see who actually goes first.

In summary, using Heroic Move or Heroic Fight in situations where both players are trying to achieve the same thing, it results in both getting a 50/50 chance and both burning a point of Might. Correct?

For some reason, the Heroic/Epic actions felt much more cumbersome than I remember from when I was playing more often.

Thoughts? Resources? Houserules for streamlining?

That is correct.

For streamlining we always say that a heroic action moves you one up in the queue, so to speak. So heroics from the player with priority always take precedence over other heroics.

Here's what we do and it goes pretty quick.

Once you get past the point where you have each committed to Heroics, the player WITHOUT priority says what heroes are doing an Heroic Move. If any of them might conflict with an Heroic Move of the player with Priority then you dice it off. Low (1-3) is Evil, high (4-6) is Good. Dicing off is the method classic SBG used to determine who goes first when a tie of action comes up. Not sure if the Hobbit SBG makes it different for any reason.

Thanks, guys.

Basically, heroics allow the player WITHOUT priority to increase his chances from NOTHing to 50/50 chance of getting a first mover advantage where he needs it.

If he loses the dice off, he and his opponent have both burned a point of might.

Appreciately,

Wade
