Hi just starting to post ramblings of my first lot of conversions I've been working on the last few weeks.

Ive resently just got back into the hobby, I started buying bits and bobs a few years back but have only really started the last few months. I've never worked with finecast before... As this didn't exist when I first started back in the late 90's. When I first got a few of the blisters out I was horrified at how light weight & brittle it all felt. But in all honesty I found it quite easy to work with.

Anyway these are a few conversions I've had in my head for years, I'm happy with the way they turned out. Please excuse the quality of the pictures I post as I've had to transfer from an iPhone to an android tablet and it all looks a little grainey.

Anyway this is Gil-galad & Elrond, I've never liked the sculps of the faces on these guys and always thought surely if your going up against the dark lord your going to wear a helmet.

Welcome back! For starters, excellent execution on the headswaps, they look sharp. I agree with you on the helmets, anybody going to war would wear a helmet. What is your plan to make your two freshly converted commanders stand out on the battlefield? Perhaps a fancier paintjob and a colorful helmet? Whatever it is, great job and I for one look forward to seeing where these go!

Thank you so much, means a lot. Was the first time I'd used green stuff in years, I was worried they would look like hunch backs or something.

I really want to try and get that greeny gold look from the film's but not too sure how to achieve it. Was looking on GW but the washes available look to make it too greeny.
I found a page where a chap used woodland scenics green undercoat as a wash so may try that.

Also Gil-galad will have blue robes & possibly playing with the idea of a blue like gem effect on the inside of his shield.

But I'm getting ahead of myself as I still have a few bits left to finish on a Gondor army I started first. Still have a Boromir and Beregond to paint.

Check out the helmet on my Elfhelm in the painting challenge for this month. I like the patina effect, but it may be too green for your tastes. I used the gw paints.

He looks awesome!!! Such a great looking miniature. I love the colour, but sadly a little too dark for what I'm after. I have a rough idea of what I'll do, I'll test it out on the couple of headless elves I now have.

You could always use really diluted dark green ink after the first bit s of dry brushing

Cheers for the advice, I tried the woodland scenics green that I had viewed on a blog, wasn't happy with the finish at all. Looked too greasey Think I will look at picking up a dark green ink. Any suggestions to a particular brand?

I always loved that old-school elrond to captain conversion!

If you want a good elven armour scheme try this:

Image

The scheme calls for very light drybrushing, building up in layers.

* First off, drybrush Chainmail Silver over the armour/shield/mail. Be careful to leave some black definition in the recesses.
* Secondly, drybrush Burnished Gold on top of that. Again, leave recesses.
* Now, mix together 1/2 Bestial Brown and 1/2 Catachan Green. Add water until it starts to thin out (but not too thin!). Wash the armour and shield - I find it's better to put a little too much on, then dry your brush off and spread it out, even painting it into the recesses.
* When the wash has dried, check it. If you think you did it too thin, do another wash.
* When it's dried, mix together 1/2 Chainmail and 1/2 Burnished Gold. Do a very light drybrush over, picking out the raised details and the edges of the armour.

For the Elven Cloak:

*Mix together 1/2 Catachan Green, 1/4 Stonewall Gray, 1/4 Black. Gradually highlight, begining the first highlight with more gray. For the subsequent highlights, add Chainmail Silver. The final highlight should only be very subtle.

ADMIN EDIT - Huge excessive quote removed.

Stunning mate, I was trying to achieve a subtle green shade in the gold armour but failed miserably. So had to go over again. As I have only really just started to paint again after a very long hiatus. Sometimes you just have to leave things be and content, and then say you are done.
