All right, time to start my very own wip thread!
Currently i'm working with some Arnor, Mordor orcs, Mirkwood rangers and Uruk Hai siege troops. I will take some wip pictures of them soon, meanwhile here is first warband i painted for my "rebooted" lotr collection!

I had them participate at Gw:s Fang painting competition back in may and these bad boys actually got me price for "Best Lord of the rings miniatures". What a great start! Although is suspect they made that price up just for me, i placed these in "Regiment" category since there wasn't actually too many other Lotr minis there...

I have tried to keep my highlights less pronounced as i tend to do with other minis, i think bit more realistic style fits well for Middle-earth. One thing i'm really wanting to improve is basing of my models!

Next, some Arnor!

Welcome Eric, nice set of figures. Well done on your win, even if you wasn't too sure if they made up the prize. A win is a win.
Your basing looks good and I have a few techniques and ideas up my sleeve. Don't forget about painting long grass, it can add a little extra dimension when you put a bright highlight on the end, with a nice dark wash at the base level.

The Arnor warrior on the far right with the snow is excellent. If as you say, you want to improve your basing then you achieved that with him.

Did you use coins for bases?

Hi Eric, love the old metal orcs

Some nice painting work there, I love the old metal orcs! 8) If you want to add some more realism to your miniatures without making to bright highlights I can recommend you Gandlaf the Grey's WiP thread, he creates great realism with warm and cold colours for highlights / shadows.
The bases look really nice already, the key in my opinion is to pick up materials from lots of different companies and mix them together so that they match. This gives great variation. For big stones I would rather go for slate or tree bark than for cork.

Nice, definitely going to try that one out!

Yes, cork fits certain kind of work but ain't best here...

Actually i used Renedra's plastic bases for these, but coins/washers would do the same trick.

These guys are joining rest of my Arnor force. Not a huge one, but with some rangers will make cool skirmish games :) Had these done for Ropecon 2014 painting competition. Those deadlines make sure you have to make some progress :D

These miniatures have lovely historical feel to them. Some great sculpting here, Arvedui's cape is just beautiful.

Excellent! The way you've done the robe on Malbeth is quality and very realistic.

I like these. Not too bright but very well painted.

Very nice job with these, I like the choice of subtler colouring on the green and yellow.

I have to say, that kit is much better than it looks like on studio pictures and packaging. For my taste and needs they will require converting, but still pleasant surprise!

Thanks :-D Sometimes you can change overall feeling a lot with small alteration on pose.

Here is rest of my Arnor warriors and Malbeth.

Color palette was inspired by only artwork GW published for Arnor at the release. I made headdress different shade of green than jacket to give it feel of different and maybe bit more light material.

In my mind they were recently driven away from their home of Fornost and now seeking shelter.

I still might add some kind of small freehand on Malbeth's cape, not quite sure about it yet. And maybe he should also have some weathering.

Can't wait to paint some more :)

Thank you :D I can do that!
Would also be cool to make or borrow suitable scenery and take some atmospheric shots of them =)
