It is, in fact, all even more impressive when realising the techniques are relatively simple, but that it's mainly a lot of hard work that went into making it. Given the results, well worth if of course. Just terrific.

Superb work. Amazing what can all be done without CGI, but with a little ingenuity. 8)

Thanks for the kind words, people!

I've always admired the special effects people before the time of CGI, and used to subscribe to Cinefex for a long time, before everything started to be software-generated. That said, the back issues which deal with the Lord of the Rings movies are quite fascinating, and highlight the miniatures and sets, too. I'm happy to turn that admiration into practical effects for the batreps!

I have one question, what paints did you use for sam?

All the Sam figures are painted as per the guide in the Fellowship journeybook page 9, i.e. catachan green / bleached bone for the cloak, codex grey jacket, scorched brown bag, goblin green / rotting flesh waistcoat, dark angels green / goblin green trousers, and vomit brown / bleached bone hair. Sorry for the old paint names, but I'm sure you'll find the equivalents if you use newer paint pots.

so, how has this campaign been coming along?

The campaign is slowly, sneakily progressing behind the scenes. There are several lines of work in progress at the moment to prepare for the next game, Amon Hen.

Some new figures need to be painted:

I will have a mood shot of the Fellowship departing Lothlórien, hence Galadriel and Celeborn figures. I'm also toying with the idea of repainting all the Fellowship members' cloaks to represent elven cloaks. I will also assemble and paint an elven bridge from Thomarillion. In addition, the boats will need detailing, and I want to convert Fellowship figures to have them sitting in the boats. For that, I have two extra sprues of plastic Fellowship figures to work with.

I will also build a small non-playable terrain piece with the Argonath:

...and dress up the (otherwise ready) Amon Hen board with photo-etched ferns:

When all these are completed, you shall see the next battle report. So do not hold your breath just quite yet (although we may actually play the game far sooner than the mood-setting scenery pieces are finished).

And, naturally, the slow building of Helm's Deep board continues. I've been focusing on the interiors, especially the stables and the armory. Here you can see the multitude of parts and plans needed for just these two interior sections:

Pushing the green wash in the late stages will add to the look of moss growing.

Thanks for the link, Gandlaf! @Hobbit, I use mainly various latex paints for scenery, mixed with RGB codes I took from screen shots of the movie. Plus various washes, of course.
