Very nice freehand. Did you shave off the bumpy jewel thing in the middle of the shield?

Wow! Great painting, Gianluca. Hope to see more soon! It's fantastic having a modelist who dedicates this way to First Age ratther than Jackson's productions. I hope that others migth follow your path.

Thank you.

I'm currently going through a little issue. I was never the best when it comes to basing.

Here is a picture of what I want in the future. It is a diorama of the two trees of light of Valinor behind the 3 houses of the Noldor.
Image

My problem is, I'm not sure how to go about basing each miniature. More specifically, I'm not sure what the landscape should be like. Obviously, it will be more of a green landscape, and I was thinking to put more and more gold leaves and silver leaves as the companies get closer and closer to the trees of light.

So, my questions are:

1. What materials should I use for the landscape? I already know what I will be doing for the trees, and how I will be constructing them.

2. For the individual and company bases, how should I paint them? I want each and every one of them to stand out as well.

Hopefully that makes sense. I just feel my current bases, especially the most recent miniature, is too plain, and there is little creativity. For those good at basing, I ask for your help.

Thanks

Hi Feanorthenoldor!
I turned your problem to my friends in the Italian forum of Il Sito dell'Anello and here are the suggestions they gave me for you by now:

ALBIONE: From what I think I understand, he wants advice on how to do the base terrain of a diorama were to place the army (in WotR style)?
Well I would make a dominance of various types of green herbs interspersed with some rocky outcrop!
The leaves on the ground would imply that I am due to the trees ... is it plausible as a thing?

ME: Well, why not? Laurelin and Telperion had life intense to paroxysm, seeing that they flourished once a day and overflowed with light; it's nice to think that even the beautiful leaves would change a lot. So: green lawn with some rocks, covered with golden and silver leaves that are concentrated under their trees and fade closer to the soldiers, right?

GANJALF: Maybe it's a strange idea, but in Gdańsk many jewelers are specialized in creating lamps and decorative trees interweaving precious metals and using amber like leaves, reading the history of Valinor and the magical shining "silmarillian" fruits I immediately thought of these pieces of furniture luxury.
I have something like 2 kg of amber collected within 20 years and in addition to scraping and polishing a little every now and then I do not do much with it, try to do something similar was in my plans in the distant future, making the trunk of the tree with realistic modeling techniques - we say certainly not gold.
Another very difficult thing to do would be to make a system with mini-LEDs placed inside a small recess in the single pieces, but you must have expensive precision instruments given the fragility.
The lights and the shades naturally present in the hardened resin are amazing, I can think of nothing more suitable to recreate the magical fruits of the golden tree.
If you want to tell him that he could contact any specialized shop and agree for about fifty grams of small pieces with high transparency, those not suitable for jewelry, then if he could easily polish them on their own (already polished they cost a lot more):

ME: But it's fantastic an idea! And the minileds, I add, seem really the Egg of Columbus: the light of flowers should not be missing, and what better solution than this?
But amber, while brilliantly solving a problem, opens another one, because there are two trees: how to make the silvery leaves of Telperion so that it stands comparison? Is there an easy way to get nice silver flakes, for example?

So, I started to pick things up again a few weeks ago, and I literally jumped into it.

Started a new blending technique, and have been loving it so far. It's been allowing me to blend contrasting colors more effectively, without having to worry about minor layering in between.

Anyways, I painted Fingon's house again. To compare to my previous try at that color scheme. Needless to say, I am pleased with the improvement, especially in the contrast NMM area.

It's a technique Glazed O (Gareth Nicholas) performs.

You can find it in his tutorials

Post subject:  Re: Feanorthenoldor's 1st age schemed elven Army

So, for a while, I have been looking for suitable versions of Gondolin soldiers, in order to represent the 12 houses of the Gondolodhrim. Also, while looking for other versions, I wanted to find models somewhat close to GW's current elven models.

I am already using all of GW's versions of elves, Lothlorien, Mirkwood and Rivendell elves for different Houses, Feanor, Finarfin, etc...

I recently found Oathmark's New Elven models, and I thought I should get a box to see how they fit in.

I'm not a huge fan of how the bodies of the models look (2nd from both sides), they don't seem very High elvish too me, but when I put their heads on Perry Miniature's Foot Knights (Center model), I thought it looked decent.

I'm still not 100% positive about it. Any feedback from you guys would be great, and possible alternatives.

I'm just praying GW comes out with new High Elven models. Lord, hear my prayer.

I noticed the paint job alterations, but what if you gave various colour schemes to existing elf models? Rivendell, Mirkwood, Loríen, they all can have many variants. I believe wood elves can also be used for the outer layer of Gondolin, especially if you paint on armour somehow. Model it on with putty? You could also use gold, silver, and grey armour to denote various houses, with blue, red, green, etc capes as well.
