I really like your army of the dead as they are well urm.... dead and not glowing. 8)
Most people paint them with glowing effects ,but I think the hollow and empty look is much better.
Perhapse it's just the picture but the nails and teeth look kind of messy ,so maybe you should do some touch ups on those parts.
You can also thin your paints a bit and use more layers ,as this will help a lot.
And maybe add some eyes ,it gives the troll a lot of character.
This may look a bit harsh ,but its just meant as advice.
O and i just saw that some metal from the straps of his arms came upon his cloth ,you should really tidy this up.
I know that i'm just a nagging old fool ,but you asked for advice. .
Is soon (I should be uploading picks of Haldir and maybe a battering ram team soon! ) today ,because i'm going on holiday for the next two weeks.(without any paint or miniatures :( :o  )

Keep up the good work

thanks for all the comments guys, much appreciated

as an amatuer I was really looking for a good "tabletop finish" for my AOTD. The armour on the troll is trying to acheive the scrappy/sharp Isengard look, maybe a badab black wash to help things along?

I really struggle to thin my paints because I have never been shown how to paint, only from reading articles on OR or other places. Maybe a trip to my local GW, will be able to help me out

Stay tuned for some more pics! :-D

I got really busy last night and I managed to finish the Uruk Hai battering ram team. This is on of my favourite mini's in the range, so I made a special effort to make it look good.

Haldir has been pushed to the side for the time being, next up is Faramirs rangers, stay tuned :)

It looks good ,but you really should put some sand/flock on the edge of the base as this is just a blak gap.
It is probably just that you whiped of some glue while basing it.
This happens a lot ,but it looks quite stuppid. :? :(
And could you give us some pictures from difrent angles?
Keep up the good work. 8)

Really nice AOTD cameda09! 8)
And the battering ram looks good too, apart from the armour; it looks a bit too shiny for Uruk-hai IMO and a little flat - perhaps dull it down a bit with a Badab Black wash?
Anyway keep up the good work!

Or, you can wash it like I have done, a mix of Badab Black, Gryphonne Sepia and Devlan Mud. That will make the armour to look dirty and rusty, perfect for uruks!

Hopefully I should have some by next week; I've painted the metal on my uruk-hai scout captain that way.

Along time ago, I started Aragon the king, but due to circumstances I couldnt finish him. You think I should strip him or continue on?

they both look pretty good. but i would say water down your paints, especially for the flesh. Aragorn's fac is a bit too textured because of the thick paints.

Yes, water down your paints. Your minis will look much smoother then.

Elrond is looking good but I'm afraid I'll have to agree that your paints need to be watered down more, especially on the faces - the focus of the model.

Thanks for your comments guys.

How should I go about watering my paints? Is there a certain way of doing it? Or a consitency I should look for?

I have the "how to paint citadel minatures" book but it doesnt tell me much about watering down paints.

Is there any links out there that might be helpful?

The key to watering paints is to add enough water to get a 'milk-like consistency'.

I'm sure there are all sorts of scientific methods of doing this, varying from dropper bottles, syringes and molecular breakdown, but the best advice is probably - have a go yourself.

It will be a case of trial and error at first. If you don't add enough water, the paint will dry out very quickly, look rough and leave lumps and visible brush marks. If you add too much water you will notice that the pigment starts to separate and the colour appears blotchy or washy.

I think paint consistency is also tied into painting ability. The real pro's advocate multiple thin coats to produce the required look, whilst certain 'gaming standard' painters (mentioning no names) have been known to advocate using paint straight from the pot for certain jobs.

EDIT - take a look at my Isengard Troll in my WIP thread for an idea of what you should be aiming for. None of the metals were watered down, and the rest of the colours were only slightly watered so that they still covered the black undercoat in one pass. The skin needed a second coat, but only because it was hard to get a flat colour on such a large area. A standard human sized model would have been fine with one coat.
