More work on the Amon Hen terrain - using the hot wire scroll table to cut the various stairs and other parts from foam:

Image

I've added depron skin to the Parth Galen walls, and scribed tiling all around. Here's a test fitting with stair pieces:

Image

A Dremel metal brush bit was used to make the parts look weather-beaten. The railings are still missing from the stairs, I will add them next. Note also the small bridge seen briefly in the movie. Here's a template I used for the bridge:

Image

Here's the current status of the Seeing seat with the stairs cut and the walls glued.

Image

The ground level is rising from right to left, and should be around where the scribed tiling ends. Here's also the weather-beaten top deck (still without the seats & eagles, though):

Image

I should be able to glue both Parth Galen and Seeing Seat to mdf bases soon, and then I can start thinking more about the layout of the entire Amon Hen board.

outstanding work. what is happening to the scenery once you have played the game?

It looks great! I like the design of the bridge! Mine is going slower than I hoped. Cold weather slowed me down.

Your stairs will make it much easier to place models for the scenario.

Even your test pieces have more attention than most peoples final piece. One thing though, it seems the final piece will be made from foam board, am I right ? This wouldn't take much playing on before it got damaged ?

@OMW: glad you like the bridge... there was only a briefest glimpse of it in the film, and I have actually no idea where it should lead to. Apparently, the Amon Hen scenes in the film were shot in multiple locations, so there is no coherency in the overall layout of the area. I'll do some testing this weekend to figure out how the board should be set. I should also cast the mold soon.

@Gandlaf: me and my friend play nice, and we seldom get into fist fights that could damage the terrain :-D But seriously, foam, foamboard and depron are rather durable, and with a coat of latex paint on top, they cannot be damaged by placing and moving minis on them. Only if you accidentally hit them with sharp objects - but then again, there's hardly any material that could withstand that without getting cracks and bumps. Foam terrain can certainly withstand acccidental dropping better than plaster casts, I assume. In any case, the damage is more likely to come from storage / transportation rather than gaming. So far my Balin's tomb has seen several battles, and it has withstood well.

@SouthernDunedain: I have no plans for the terrain as such, but given my fondness of narrative scenarios, I do think each piece will be used occasionally even after the campaign-related game has been played. All this depends of course on my ability to find storage space for all of them... in the end, I may have to sell something away, too.

Thanks, Darthvegeta800!

Here's the current status... still working on Amon Hen, mostly. The Parth Galen stairs are now ready for paint. Since the previous pic, the railing stones have been added, and some loose rubble on the stairs.

Image

The Seeing Seat is also mostly glued together, and is waiting for the plaster parts before paint:

Image

Various Hirst Arts blocks were used to construct these ruined arches:

Image

Here are some statues and additional bits to be used in the Amon Hen board; bits of ruin, the large head, the fallen king and the stairs are from Thomarillion, the other statues are from Ziterdes. The boats are from eBob.

Image

I made two mold boxes (decided to use mdf rather than plastic), one for the Seeing Seat parts and another for the Helm's Deep columns. I need to get more rubber tomorrow to actually cast the molds... I don't seem to have enough left at the moment.

Image

Image

Finally, started work on about 40 Uruks for the Amon Hen scenario, including two poses of Lurtz and one Uglúk. First step is drybrushing the armour & weapons.

It looks very good. You have made a lot of progress. I like the damaged columns. I remember the scene in the movie but I do not know where they belong. The small curved stair is also a good idea. I am going to have to find a head. I did not get one when they were in production.
Amon Hen looks good. What mold making product do you intend to use?

The Helms Deep columns look good too.

@all, thanks for the comments!
@OMW, I'm using RTV silicone rubber made by a German company called EFCO - that's the easiest for me to source by just walking to the local hobby store. Comes with a 400g can of silicone and a small bottle of hardener to be mixed in.

Post subject:  Re: Celevue's LotR campaign - behind the scenes (4/2 Amon He

Work continues with Amon Hen - I kinda promised to have the terrain & figures on display at the local hobby show in little less than three weeks, so much like with the Watcher's Pool terrain a year ago, I have again given myself a very hard deadline.

But on with the show - I've created molds for the Seeing Seat parts, as well as Helm's Deep columns. I'll use the latter mold later. Mixing the hardener with the RTV rubber was a bit messy.

Image

I painted the rubber on the Seeing Seat parts first to ensure air bubble free molds.

Image

Although the instructions said the working time with the mixed rubber was half an hour, I noted that the mixture was starting to get noticeably harder almost instantly. I had no choice but to pour the mixture on the Helm's Deep mold box and hope for the best.

Image

Luckily, the molds turned out rather fine. Only one of the columns in the Helm's Deep mold had plenty of air bubble holes, and I can live with that.

Image

Image

The rubber instructions said to let the molds be for 3-4 days before casting, so I haven't added the cast parts to the Seeing Seat yet. Nevertheless, I've basecoated the Parth Galen and other bits black.

Image

I've also started work on a 90x40 cm bit to represent the shoreline of Anduin. I've given this piece a priority over the other terrain parts... I remember how long it took for Woodland Scenics Realistic Water to harden, so I don't want to cast water only a couple of days before the model show.

Image

Finally, I've added four dead evil (Evil Dead?) models just to dress up the display for the model show:

Image

The 39 Uruks (including Uglúk and two Lurtzes) have received their share of tin bitz / chainmail drybrush and scorched brown. Next they'll receive dark flesh (although Uglúk should rather get something akin to very dark grey/purple - I'll experiment to find a suitable color).

Image

I skipped painting dying Boromir late last year when I batch painted heroes, because I wanted to keep the option of modifying him into dying with a sword / axe wound instead of arrows. Now he comes back and bites me... but I still have plenty of days to paint him for the display, too - I just have to leave the arrows fairly loose. I'd also like to paint another Gimli (with elven cloak). Let's see if I have enough time, or if I have to either remove my other Gimli from the dwarven statue base, or, alternatively, hide the statue behind a bush. We wouldn't have any dwarven statues at Amon Hen, now would we?

More work with the shoreline to follow, as well as dry-fitting of all the individual pieces to anchor the overall board layout. More pics to follow rather rapidly throughout the next couple of weeks.

For me too.

I am very interested in how the scenario plan is working out in relation to the model. I need to think about it a bit more before I start on the next element.
I have been inspired to up grade a few elements and start a Scouring of the Shire campaign. At least my figures are painted so I can work on the terrain for the Shire and he Seeing seat Scenarios.
