Oooh! Nice! Original!! Great idea!!
Although I regret to see your dragon is already slain and ripped off of his scales... (but then again, I'm sure you can rescale him once again... it's only like 62000 scales or so...)

Or did this guy found his dragon armour somewhere else? :)

Great job, love this! Very nice robes, great chainmail! And awesome job on the wooden shield!

Wow, I just went through most of this article and you have some AMAZING work. Beautiful uruk army ( its the one I have been dreaming of, besides the other 400 that are missing :D ).

P.S If you do need some movement trays I may be able to hook you up....cheap.

Last night I did the dreaded job of embedding my mini in plastercine. It takes a long time to try to get the line right, where the model meets the 'fence', trying to avoid as many undercuts as possible.

Then it was the even worse moment of painting sticky rubber into the details and pouring the rest in to cover the half model. I did spray some mold release on first. :)

And now for the bit I'm really not good at...

waiting.

I have to leave it at least 24 hours to cure before I can clean up the other half of the model and pour in the rubber to finish the mold. How slowly time passes... tick tick tick...

Now I know the secret of being a great sculptor - Lego and Plasticine

This would look great among AotD.

A good point, Dorthonion. All that time playing with plastercine and Lego, as a child, has helped give me the modelling and construction skills that I use today.

That's the idea!

What? Is there someone with even less patience than me?!

Yes, it set and I removed the plastercine last night before spraying with mold release and pouring in the second half's rubber to cover the back of the mini.

Image

This morning I carefully removed the Lego box and peeled apart the two sides of the mold. The detail has been captured really well.

I've just cleaned off the remaining bits of plastercine.

Now I've another wait in store as I have to leave it for at least 48 hours before casting.
I can't wait to see how the mini turns out! :-D

Woohoo! Impatience got the better of me and I did some casting today.

My next project will be to make some conversions of this model to add variety to my dead army.

They came out nice and crisp. Well Done Nathan. Whatever happened to the orc masters you were working on?

I couldn't get the leg right and wasn't really happy with the head I'd sculpted so I've left them for the time being.

They are superb and the sculpting is fantastic. I love that Dragon Scale armour and the shield is great as well.

Will these also be on offer for trade like the Banner Bearer? Cause I'd jump at the chance to get some for converting.

Fantastic work, your sculpture has come out very well. What rubber mould stuff did you use? Was it the one that had to be heated?

The work on this thread is amazing; totally inspired.

I especially like your Uruk army from a few pages ago, the line of pikes is exactly what that army was supposed to look like!

Just a couple of questions about this dead swordsman of yours, did you sculpt the entire model or is it a conversion?
Also, what material did you use in your casting to create the duplicates?
That work is one of the more awesome things I've seen lately :yay:

He is a massive reworking of another of my sculpts. I took a less successful cast of my banner bearer (scratch-sculpted - see article kb.php?a=164 and my gallery for a better picture gallery/image_page.php?album_id=87&image_id=377 ) and cut off his arm, head and sword. After a lot of snipping away of cloak, cloth and chainmail, I was ready to reassemble and sculpt a new mini.
It is illegal to make casts of other people's copyrighted work - so you won't find me doing that.
The whole pleasure in this, for me, is being able to create an original miniature. I think this one is better than the banner bearer in some ways. It certainly casts much easier. I spend ages on the banner casts, which are a bit hit, hit, hit and miss, while these seven swordsmen all came out right first time. :)

Decapitation etc.

Reassembly before sculpting.

The casting material is a low melt allow which contains lead - so hands must be washed after handling etc. until metal is painted.

The rubber is rtv 101, which is a cold rubber. A hazardous catalyst is added to the rubber and stirred in thoroughly. I cast it as per UKFB's article kb.php?a=149

I'll consider it depending on what's on offer. Please give me a pm to discuss.

Last night I cleaned one up and painted it with a simple but effective aotd scheme.
Pictures later. :)
