Thats some really nice sculpting, you've got some talent.

What kind of stores do you go to to get plastic card? all those little square and round rods look like the could be very useful. Also, can you carve stuff into plastic card?

I get my plasticard in a local model shop but there's tons of places online to purchse it. Yes you can carve it up. Takes getting used to but not that difficult.

LOTR is a labour of love for me and I'm not entirely sure I'm up to scratch for it yet but I'm getting there. Cutting my teeth on 40k stuff but soon... maybe in time for xmas I reckon (xmas/winter always sparks LOTR in me probably because they were always out in the cinema at xmas).

The new/recent GW LOTR releases kind of overshadowed my original plans so I'll need to regroup on them but I'm doing a lot of prep for it (buying various GW minis for scale reference, depsite probably not getting round to painting them for years).

Few more bits and pieces I've been working on:

Haha what's wrong with the bases?! Looks like you put them to a lighter or something

Anyways, the minis are looking absolutely amazing. I already see a LOT of improvement since the first pictures of this thread. Keep it up :)
Btw, are those eBob armatures?

Yeah that's what happens when you put a lamp with 2" of the minis for a quick cure haha...

No those are my own armatures I made. Ebob's stuff is 28mm true scale, these are 28mm heroic (stockier and more cartoonish). I have a lot of ebobs stuff and will probably use his armatures for some LOTR civilians/peasants. I used them on my swine warriors a page or 2 back.

Your own armatures?! How'd you make em?

I guess he sculpt them and then cast them...

Yes I just sculpt them and hand cast them in white metal. Fairly easy but quite time consuming. This tutorial pretty much explains the process:

There were some suggestions for LOTR sculpts a few posts back but in light of the new Galadhrim and what not, what's the general consensus on stuff I should do?

Are civilians a good start?

I'm genuinley intrigued with doing some things from earlier ages but I reckon were spoiled with plastics and it's easy enough to convert most things.

Are elves in different suits of armour a good idea?

1. Civilians are a good start, but you might find them a little boring... I might suggest that with your sculpting skills, it'd be easy to make some generic troops, which could be quite fun (Uruks, Gondor warriors, Rohan warriors, etc...) or maybe even some new takes on heroes and whatnot...

2. Elves in suits of armor are a great idea! It'd be real cool to see some different sculpts then those crappy GW ones :)

Keep us posted,

I think you should sculpt civilians, or more hobbits. I have always liked the hobbits, but IMO, they're too few...

Conversion bits are a good idea ! Hands holding horns, banners, fire torches, etc. Any other ideas?

Civilians would be a good warm up for me, I'll need to scour the movies and special features to try and match what they're wearing.

I'm sure I could easily come up with generic warrios of my own design but I'd like to try and base them on something from Tolkein mythology. For example the brigands from Children of Hurin... but like I said I'm sure folks could just make them from the plastic rangers box.

The designs of the LOTR races and nations are pretty solid and super iconic, they're a very tough act to follow. Because most of it's plastic too (one or two piece moulding in a lot of instances) that throws up some serious design ideas that I'll need to try and follow to make sure my stuff doesnt look out of place.

I'll post some sketches soon, keep the ideas coming please :)
