some guy on ebay is selling counterfeit hobbit minis. he posts them as primed in black paint, but they are made of some homemade material. the quality is just horrible. multi part minis have massive gaps, very poor detail, brittle, poorly packaged. and the material smells of chemicals. i was unfortunate enough to be a victim of this person, but i'm posting this here so others don't get sucked into this scam.

the seller's name is pesadilla props, from spain. he does not accept returns and it's too much hassle to try to follow it up with ebay. i have reported him to gw already, but it'll probably take them forever to actually do anything about it, if they do anything at all.

Nice tip off. I do fear that things like this are only set to increase, in particular as 3D printing technology develops.

Did you pay with paypal? You should be able to claim your money back as it is illegal (maybe not in spain?).

i did. long story short- i made two sets of orders. while waiting for the first set i ordered the second. once the first arrived i realized it was fake and reported it to ebay. i had to pay shipping to send it back to the seller and after all of that, ebay decided not to refund me because apparently my tracking number was not recognized. (and of course i double checked with my post office)

so it really was a bad deal. if gw will not do anything i will take matters into my own hands and try to stop this guy however i can.

link to a fake mini. definitely not finecast. he's hiding the material under black paint sometimes.

Maybe you could report it to your local police and see if they can . Pass on the sellers info to Spanish policw. Counterfeiting is a serious international issue, surely there must be some sort of cooperation between national police forces especially across the European.

No wonder they are so cheap. Azog costs 35 euro and that guy is selling him for seven.

That's the shipping cost you're looking at :)

You are correct . That is not Fine Cast. It looks like a better quality resin to me.

Post subject:  Re: FAKE hobbit minis

it smells rather toxic though. and it's more brittle than finecast. my minis came missing fingers and tips of weapons.

Toxic is not the right word. Resins have health issues including Fine Cast.
Gynecomastia has been linked to some of the chemicals. Linked is not the same as caused by. I cast with resin and understand the risk. Resin is not safer than lead.

As far as missing fingers and weapons, if you copy a poor miniature you will have a copy of a poor miniature.
Fine Cast on E bay is not worth the risk. Fine Cast from GW is hardly better. GW will replace a defective miniature with a another defective miniature until you give up. They will also tell you they have great customer service.

I do not want to cast aspersions on any body but I have for a long time thoughts these 'white metal' minis look very suspicious, particularly due to the low cost.
Perhaps those in the forum with more experience can clarify.

Hypothetically speaking if GW keeps sending defective replacement miniatures, if you lost patience and requested a refund would they give you one? And if they refused, how would they react if you threatened to report them to Trading Standards?

I do not think that has been a issue with anyone :? I think it would be in GW's best interest to make a refund. They would be within their rights to ask for packaging and receipt of sale. It is not worth the time involved to have the first one replaced.

It is hard to judge but I would not have a reason to suspect anything from the photo

Those, to me, look very much like pirated copies. The seller has rather large quantities of each model and is selling them for dirt cheap; the models also look to be made of a different material than a normal Citadel metal model. Packaging is not typical of used minis, but he would have no reason to have so many pristine figures for sale with no blisters or boxes of any kind. He bought 52 mounted Gandalfs and decided to remove them all from their blisters to sell them?
