i have purchased the mines of moria hobby set and would like to know how you would paint a cave troll

Hmmm...well, with just the paints in the MOM hobby set, I would recommend just following the painting guidelines inside. Or, here's a guide http://www.one-ring.co.uk/phpBB2/kb.php?mode=article&k=634

BTW, have you painted before, or did you just start?

If you're a starter, I wouldn't recommend the cave troll to begin with. If you want to paint something different as goblins, try a hobbit.
Nobody sees it if you paint something wrong on them. When you paint an ugly cave troll, everybody sees it, because it's the biggest miniature of the hole box

I go with that advice. Start developing your skill before you try the Cave troll. I didmine a different way by using a lot of Dwarf Flesh to get a different skin tone.
It was done in a big series of highlights built up from the dark grey colour. I have a photo in my gallery.

Alternatively...

The Cave Troll is as good as model as any to practice on. And, what with it being a much larger model than your regular infantry, will allow you to refine your brush control. Because the model is bigger, it also means you should find it easier to distinguish all the different areas, and this should theoretically make it easier to paint.

I find painting Mordor Trolls just as easy as Mordor Orcs. Plus, you can use a bigger brush.

i threw myself in at the deep end when i started, luvly metal mordor troll,found my first solider of gondor to be more difficult,troll looked quite good, but has since been re painted, quite nice to look at old models and think
"wow ive come on a long way since then, was i really that bad?"

I am a starter to
and painting the troll was really great
there are not really much details to paint
and you could experiment a bit on it
rough painting suits him well


I started with drybrushing rotting flesh on him
And then i went over it with paint thinned with water
Gob green for the skin and white on his belly
and after that i did a bestial brown layer (also thinned with water) Above the green ( but not all.) This painted very roughly
Drybrushed some spots with codex gray and then did a wash over it
and this gave me ....
