When I saw this on the news it made me sad. It appears like a massive vanity project. But then that's what you get when some people have a lot of spare cash. :(

If you haven't already seen it, a Liverpool businessman has already cashed in with a Titanic-themed floating hotel. It's on a much smaller scale than the Titanic II (in fact it looks pretty tacky) but the comments around it might be interesting:

Anyway, whilst I have some sympathy with Amarthadan's train-of-thought, this project clearly crosses any normal boundary of decency. If nothing else, it's just plain tacky. I'll therefore be signing your petition too.

I don't see how this is bad. The ship could easily be turned into a cruise museum, which would be the ultimate memorial. Besides, nothing could be less respectful than the Titanic movie, so this by comparison is nothing.

I totally agree that if it was going to be used as a museum where everyone could go and experience it that would be great but unfortunately this is not the case.

I have to agree with Draughluin here. I really don't see what the big deal is, and if most people are of the same mind as those who have signed then the business will fail. I personally think that it should be up to consumers to decided what they want to spend their money on not society or government.

What I was trying to say in a nicer sounding way. Got me thinking, if people would have the same mind-set as everyone who signs the petition, wouldn't it be satisfactory to watch them spend millions on the project only to see it fail?

Haha yes it would. We're not naive enough to think that our petition will stop the Titanic II project from going ahead We are just voicing our opinion on the subject in the only way we can. The more I read on various Titanic orientated forums the more I see just how controversial this project is. It has caused a divide right through the Titanic community.
I can understand what you were saying Amarthadan and know of course that no offence was intended, this subject means an awful lot to so many people so feelings tend to run a little high. We're all entitled to voice our opinions wheather we agree or not.

I hope that my post didn't make anyone feel that I was trying to stop anyone from signing the petition. I hope that those who feel that they want to voice their opinion will do so. I should have actually looked at your petition before I posted to be better informed as to what your intentions were. There is just a lot going on here in America and I let my annoyance with my fellow countrymen lead me to making an assumption that you where trying to block it more than just letting people know your views.

I'm a strong advocate for freedom of speech and believe that everyone should have the right to voice their opinions on any subject no matter what it is. Let your voices be heard and let no one silence you.

Anyone wants to bet the thing will sink? Anything named "Titanic", "Gigantic" or such seems to be cursed...

And on the petition being hopeless, yes it is, but why does that mean you shouldn't sign? If you don't voice your complaints about something publicly, then you shouldn't make those complaints privately either. If you disapprove of something, try to do something about it, even if you're just making a statement.

Post subject:  Re: TITANIC II PETITION

I think a full scale replica should be built, but its purpose should definitely NOT be as an actual commercial cruise liner operating cruises and carrying passengers. That would obviously be disrespectful and trivialise the disaster, as others have said.

Rather, it should be used as a sort of Living History Museum and Memorial. They could even sail it from country to country (Portsmouth, Belfast, New York etc) for exhibitions. Any Revenue raised (after funding the operation of the museum itself) could go to charities and funds related to the Titanic and other maritime disasters.

Of course, the very idea of building a replica of a ship on which 1502 people died for whatever purpose, is extremely controversial and potentially offensive, so its probably best to not do it.
