Is it the fact that...
he established the guild of Sea Venturers and that because of his renowned voyages and love of the sea, mariners from all areas of Numenor flocked to sail within Aldarions fleet ?

I cant really recall a specific statement (not meaning that there isnt one) that tells why he was called the Great Captain. :?

That is the one! I thought that it said that the Leaders of the Guild of venturers were called "Great Captains" , so he would be called the Great Captain because of that.
