Of course I thought you were talking about spray primer.
I don't use GW brand paints. I don't like the price.The bottles seem to be designed to waste paint. I like dropper bottles better.
I would strip it and use spray primer.

Tried priming a metal figure using Technical Imperial Primer, not sure if I'm using it wrong. The thing applies on like a wash and the majority of the time stays to the recesses. My coats were fairly heavy. Maybe it is more meant for plastics, resins and touch ups of chipped paint. EDIT: Alright when you have a Technical Imperial Primer pot that is watery you must have it stirred and shaken, then it will become very thick that you will have to mix it on a palette with water to get the proper viscosity before coating. |

Longer with an old can. Apply several thin coats. Apply from 10 inches away. The Cheap Walmart gray and Red oxide are easier to apply than the flat black. Watch out for dark gray auto sandable primer it will be too thick.Thick sandable primer is for filling imperfections in Bondo/ plastic body filler and is meant to be sanded and reprimed. |

I've had similar problems with it Sacrilege83. I have ended up stripping quite a few undercoated minis as the chainmail etc has just gotten gobbed up |

Alright I'm annoyed now. The paint is coming off too easily. The worst thing is it's my Saruman model for the painting challenge. Too lazy to take out the spray can for a single model, I went the quick rout. And yes Afastr I have globs on mine also. EDIT: It's a no go, the paint strips off too easily. I'm going to have to strip the entire model and start all over again. I'm going to miss the deadline of the challenge for sure now. So much for that. |

Click to: Show Edit: seems like most of the paint is holding up on my Saruman, so I'll try to do fixes and continue. Running a test on a bit, heavily applied, the metal looks like it only received a wash and the crevasses are globing a bit. Nothing like the guy's video above, I didn't even add water. |

Yeah, sticking to spray, I think my bottle is defective because it applies nothing like the video shows. I just didn't want to stink up my apartment for a single miniature. |

From what I remember, it needs lots of shaking to mix it up properly otherwise it is very watery. |

^Aah, I didn't expect I needed instructions for this. Thought it would be just easy pop open and start coating. My test bit still loses paint around the edges. So next time I'll shake the pot even more vigorously and stir it, and add two coatings and see how that results. Still spray is more efficient. Just need the proper ventilation and setting up a spray area. The bottle primer would seem more convenient in the winter for people without garages/work area. |

I had a similiar issue with the Imperial primer pots before I switched over to spray primers..... If the primer pot is 'old', and has been sitting on a GW shelf for a few years before you bought it (which you won't know for sure), it will need more than just a vigorous shake - you will need to use the butt end of a brush or something similar, to stir it around manually for a good 5-10 minutes...this helped changed the consistency for me from overly watery and running into the crevices to a thicker consistency and applies more like the GW video shows. I did buy some primer pots that were apparently 'newer', and those applied perfectly without shaking. But it was always a mystery for each pot until that 1st time use with it. But I've switched to spray on primer since then, and have had no issues at all (knock on wood). I use Krylon Spray Primer, usually in grey, and it works great for me.... |

I haven't developed arthritis in my wrists yet, seems like a neat gizmo though. A better idea would be to have a paint case that automatically shakes on a timer  @ja33, I recognize the problem now, going to test later. Thanks for the confirmation.
