Hullo Everybody!

I'm thinking about getting the paining guide book of GW.

Is it any good? Can anyone say if it's worth it's money? I wonder if I can still learn anything of it since I'm not a very good painter but in my opinion above average.

Hi, I deleted the pointless posts in this thread. Maybe someone can chime in with something on topic.

The book is brilliant IMHO. I'm not a great painter and never will be, but this book and the new paints have helped me improve my results in a huge way.

There are some good guides in the book, but it's definitely worth looking at first as I just didn't like the painting style. There are probably better guides out there though - including free ones online.

I would say that if you've been painting for a few years it's probably not worth your cash, but then it is a nice read.

I don't have this new one as I don't own any of the new paints. I did however invest in the previous edition with the old paint range and found it very useful. I can't see why this wouldn't be just as helpful to aspiring painters.

The new one does a great job at explaining how to use the new paint range. It assumes you are using the different types of paint in the new range and shows well how they play together. Unlike the old editions, it does not explain mixing harmonious layers, colour theory, blending, or anything you can't do straight from the paint pot.

If you are using the new range, this book is great. I got several ideas from it while testing the new range.

If you are using Vallejo or some other more traditional range, the older editions of the book are better, and actually really good to get in any case. They will teach you quite a lot.

I can't comment on the new book but the old one is a bible for all the colour theory / mixing stuff. Some of the articles in the later editions of Battle Games in Middle Earth are good too.

I thumbed through the guides. I saw a lot of technical advise in there. That is nice, but I paint more intuitively. What I really was looking for were more complete color guides for LOTR/WOTR. For my specific forces, the old sourcebooks were quite a bit more useful. If you want to really delve into the ricky-ticky of miniature painting, I think you would be well served.

Like I said, I just need the colors/or what they converted to, and a basic understanding of how they are put down.

I will also add, a pair of 1x (or more if you like) magnification glasses has helped me tremendously. I could not see myself with one of those mag-lamp! But I think I look just as crazy with the glasses.

Pretty much agree with the posts above, I have both books and have learnt things from both. The original published in 2008 is more in depth, GW have "dumbed" everything down the last few years.

If you get the old book, just use common sense with the colour names. Page 32 is really good, about colour blending.

But if you either then you will not go wrong, but the original is the best, as they say!

I'm not really into blending, mixing or anything of that sort. I've been using the new colour range for some time now and have almost all the GW brushes. I have never heard of the colour theory so.. on that part.

I guess the book would suit my needs for painting advice?
