Don't worry I'm sure someone else will come up with a viable alternative ;)

I'm not sure if everyone is aware of these but they were licensed LOTR models from Harlequin back in the day, then Legions of the Realm sold by Black Tree and now produced by Scotia Grendel as 'Generic Fanatasy'. They keep adding more to the line as time goes on and you can get a decent range of them now, including 'personalities'. Personally I really like the Men Of The West but due to their age they won't be to everyones taste:

I personally like red box games ( 20% off until halloween with "halloween" code) and they are based in the US, easier for us yanks.

I agree. Maybe I was too optimistic but I thought that unofficial generic unlicenced might also mean discount prices compared Gw. We always criticise Gw as being expensive, and some of that money actually goes to the licences etc.

But anyway If Gw aren't going to make a dain on a mount then I am going to buy this one. Suck it up and pay my money :)

They may well do in the future now so I will wait and see.

While I agree the sculpts are fantastic, the fact remains that they are IMPO too expensive, being that I haven't even bought any GW minis since they decided the new price for foot and mounted versions of the same model warranted £27.
Dain on a pig is a really nice collectors piece however in the game he has no profile and as we have discussed before both on here and Facebook, there is alot of contention and heated debate about what his profile should be and where he would fit in especially in light of how powerful the hobbit profiles are when compared with the old LotR ones.
Back to to the minis, so far the unreleased minis have captured Dain the best especially the mtd version, Forlong mtd is very dynamic, almost oddly so, very crisp detail from what I can see and that is a good thing, I'm not a fan of the reavers however some of the heads look unnatural to me, both in position and relative head/body ratio. Although I kind of like the prowlers, in terms of sculpting quality I find something about the boots/feet bother me.
Thorin mtd looks brilliant, don't think much of his pony however, the lower legs look very delicate and tappered, the prince himself though spot on!
But all of this is from the pictures I've seen on their website, so yeah take it or leave it!

I though I'd pass along info that the chap who sculpted a number of GW models for the Hobbit such as Smaug, Gary Hunt, has released a few dragon models privately that fit the LOTR aesthetic nicely.

I think Smaug was sculpted by Michael Perry. It was his last sculpt for GW.

If you take a look at Bilbo (Smaug's Bilbo), you can see that the miniature has the same proportions as most of the LOTR range, which were sculpted by the Perry twins.

My mistake there, it was this Smaug he sculpted. Similar, but different!

Still, the minis above fit the LOTR aesthetic quite well. Just need a few rules for them....

Those are great! If I didn't already have an extensive LOTR collection I would invest in those minis. Actually, scratch that. I think I just found my arnor proxies.

Looking at those Scotigrendel figures, those easterners might be able to be used a Dale troops--Just wish they had cavalry.

No problem. But thanks for the suggestion, 'cause I'm looking for a suitable Smaug in 10mm scale.

I think i read Smaug was also the first sculpt the Perry Bros used a Computer to model and there last ever sculpt for GW. They did comment on FB that the fast sales of the model meant it should have been made in plastic and not resin
