sweet, loving the things coming from PJ and GDT. The spider models look awsome, (why could GW come up with something like that?). So Ron Pearlman is considered to be in the movie? Any guess' who he could play? Personally I would love to see him as one of the trolls.

Ron Pearlman...hmmm, I could see him as Bolg or even The Great Goblin, maybe even Bard.

I see Ron Perlman as either Thorin or Beorn. As he is a leading actor and a favourite of GDT's, I will plump for Thorin. I thought initially he may have been the voice of Smaug, but reading the article it seems GDT has someone else lined up (Sean Connery, James Earl Jones?).

A new style for the goblins and wolves sounds interesting - no reason for the wolves to look like the hyena style wargs from the trilogy and the talking was managed OK in the Narnia movie. I am a little concerned as to how they will deal with the encounter with the trolls though; comparing the book of the Hobbit to the LotR films, it may jar a bit for me.

Overall though I am really excited by the new films (and minis from GW or Mithril?).

Just saw this on another forum:

http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0553888/

Looks like Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro have decided to write the scripts themselves.

does anyone know what is going to be in the second film?? i read in some interviews that it would 'bridge the gap' where gandalf left but does that mean we will get to see the fall of the necromancer??

There are a lot of rumors around that point and this will probably be some of the best kept secrets in the industry for a long time.

Gandalf's stealing into Dol Guldur and getting the map and key to Lonely Mountain is very likely going to be part of that. I would imagine they would also put in much of the second White Council's actions against the Necromancer, but keep in mind that the actual fall of Dol Guldur happened after the destruction of the One Ring. Saruman's corruption and search for the OR would also be good details to have in there, as would some of Aragorn's early life (maybe even his time fighting with Rohan and meeting a young Theoden depending on the time frame). It may also be cool to show some of the fall of Moria or Balin's attempt to reclaim it if they wanted to give the Dwarves a little more of a role in the story and bring back the Balrog (though I can't remember the historic timeline well enough right now to know if that's appropriate), or else some of the visits of the agents of the Dark Lord to the Dwarves to talk them into getting Bilbo's ring back in exchange for what was left of the Seven Rings. Generally speaking, there is a lot of material available that some good stories could be crafted from.

There are several key figures that are shown in the LotR films that would be present in such a bridge movie. Galadriel, Elrond, Gandalf and Saruman come immediately to mind (with Aragorn and Arwen being a strong possibility) but the list could be much longer. As others have said too, I do very much hope that they are able to keep the same actors/actresses in such cases, but the time between when these films will be made and the last time these actors were filmed will have been many long years. It's hard to go back and to a prequel movie after such time with the same actors and have the ability to portray the characters at the same age or younger.

Not really, there's just over 4 months left of 2008.

Less than 2 and a half years in total.

Man, my kids won't even be at school.

My son will be 7 but that will still be too young to share this with. He's almost ready for me to start reading the Hobbit to him (working up from softer fairy tails) and I have a DVD of the animated Hobbit (don't knock it, for a young child it's a great adaptation and fired my imagination for years). But I'm pretty sure this film is going to be for 13+.
