First post - bit apprehensive!

We have part of a WOTR battle where 3 companies (2xDol Amroth Foot Knights, 1xRangers Of Gondor) are lined up vs 3 companies (2xUruk Hai Pikemen, 1xUgluk's Raiders).

The problem is, the way the battle squares up after charging, is that we can't work out whose Defence value to use! Help please?

1xCompany of Dol Amroth Foot knights (Def:7) and the Gondor Rangers (Def:4) end up against 1xUruk Pikemen. So when the Uruks roll to hit, against which Defence Value are they rolling - 7 or 4? Or can the Uruks choose? I.e. All 8 vs the Gondor Rangers or the Dol Amroth Knights?

The other side is reversed with 1xDolAmroth Foot Knights taking on 1xUruk Hai Pikemen (Def:5) and 1xUgluk's Raiders (Def:4) - but you can see the dilemma.

I'm sure we are missing something simple - could someone point out what it is please!

Its not really a dilemma, you have to choose who the target is for each company. So your knights can elect to strike Ugluks raiders and the second company provides support (the +1 die) or they can strike the Pikemen. Look at page 51 (WOTR main rulebook) for more in-depth coverage of this

You use the defence value of the company you are putting your hits against (which is your choice).

Thank you for your time! Much clearer.

On a similar vein, I've got Boromir and Prince Imrahil in one of the companies. As each has a Resilience of 3, if the opposition score 4 hits against us, can I just have Boromir and Prince Imrahil soak up the hits (at 2xHits each)?

Likewise, if they scored 5xHits, I'd plan on removing 1xKnight and then using the remaining 4 (impotent) hits on Boromir and Imrahil.

It seems a little unsporting (not least because I'm facing Ugluk and Lurtz in the others!) but I can't find anything that says you can't do this...

agree on the posts above. But me and my buddy decided that you have to state which formation you're going to strike on. Not that you roll the dice first and then check out which formation would have the most casualties.

It's mostly a strategical dilemma of which formation you want destroyed or disordered.

No, you should re-read the part of the book on the fight phase and the bit on hero's. I can't really explain why this is wrong without going into a lot of the mechanics of WOTR which would be posting too many rules (not allowed).

Heroes resiliance is only factored in when dealing with heroic duels or other special rules, not standard strikes

That is the same thing as the fact you will always resolve your strikes against the formation never the hero. Example. Gilgalad is in a formation of elves.. in any case you would not gain any bonus on Fightvalue difference because Gilgalad has 10. But you can't strike on the hero.. you'll always have to hit the elves with their fightvalue

Thanks Lorindol.

If I may, to continue your example, what then happens when my elven company is reduced to Gilgalad and 1xElf...and we suffer another casualty?

Do I then have to remove Gilgalad? The rules say I cannot have more heroes than ordinary troops. Or can I remove the ordinary elf and leave Gilgalad on his own?

I think I know what the answer is but I don't think it's the one I'm hoping for...

When the command company is reduced to 4 models, that company is removed automatically regardless of who is still there.

Actually that formation would already have been removed as they are under 50% of their final company, only models that are "Indomitable" could be in the situation you described. I don't want to post too many rules here so ill point you to the page you need for Gil-galad's sake. Pg 68 under fielding epic heroes. Also look at the next section titled moving epic heroes, it will help you avoid the situation you just described

best way to learn is to play it a lot. even better to play it with someone who knows the rules well.

I recall not knowing anything about resisting spells in my first battles!
