Post subject:  Easterling siege weapons

So i am about to start a project for my easterling army and that would be siege weapons!
My thoughts are something like 2-3 siege bows (medium sizes, bigger than bolt thrower, smaller than uruk balista) and 2 catapults.
So here are my following thoughts

1-have to be themed with the easterling army
2-must be mobile since easterlings were an invading army, never stationed to one place

So here i need everyone's imagination :) i had some thoughts and designs myself but i have seen amazing inspiration on this site so i want you to let your imagination go wild and see any thoughts that can come to life :)
photos/blueprints/schematics/ideas are all welcome

cheers!

Siege bows: http://store.warlordgames.com/collectio ... roballista
If it's good enough for them Romans, it should be good enough for the Easterlings. :)

Catapults would simply be too big for something like that, and would not have to be mobile in situations where they are required (sieges). Would probably simply dismantle them, transport them on carts and rebuild when necessary, taking local stones as munition.

I never really imaged catapults to be a part of Easterling culture. I think bolt throwers are more likely as they are a very "spiky" culture. I think something about the same size as the avenger bolt thrower but mounted on a platform with wheels would work. Or maybe something 50% smaller than this:

i really that siege bow (sticky fingers) and ill start making it as next project :D

now for catapults i know its not much of eastern theme but i need 1-2 of them for sieges so i am considering a trebuchet like (much like gondor)

i am still open to more ideas or pics but as soon as i find time i will start making 2-3 siege bows of that kind :)

Have you seen king arthur? They use something similar to a catapult but has a sling like a trebuchet that fires big balls of hay/straw presumably soaked in oil. Not the best for knocking down walls but light and transportable and still cause destruction and mayhem

You might consider buying a couple of Osprey Publishing books, Siege Weapons of the Far East (vol 1 & 2), they could help spur the imagination. Or google korean/chinese/japanese siege weapons or variants thereof.

Since they're an eastern nation based on eastern cultures, you might want to go with some kind of primitive cannon. We know that Sauron had explosives, since they were used at the Battle of Pelennor Fields, and since it's loosely based on the real world he would have gotten them from the East.

When did Sauron use explosives? Book or movie? I don't remember that....

Well im glad this topic has been brought up again because i didnt start this project yet.
I must admit i do not remember when/where sauron used explosives in the books.

I was thinking something more to a 4 wheel balista but any thoughts/images are very welcome.

Book, they blasted holes in the walls around the Pelennor to get their massive armies through.

I like the idea of dragon cannons, like in Mulan. Gandalf had fireworks, so why not? They could spew Greek fire [napalm]. A kamikaze troll being prodded on decked out in gold armour with a dragon cannon missile launcher would rock; or a man with explosives a la uruk-hai berserkers would be neat. And they totally need their own battering ram, dragon themed of course. Umbar also uses explosives, so it is themed.

Continuing with the eastern inspired theme, why not hand powered trebuchets

There are some nice more unusual medieval torsion powered catapults out there

The Chinese and Japanses (whom I consider inspriation for the Easterlings in the game) didn't seem to go in for the big siege engines that europe did. I have seen a lot of pictures of oriental siege bows. They seemed to look more like giant cross bows on stands, than the more mechanical looking Roman stryle bolt thrower.

While not perhaps historically Chinese or Japanse, I have also seen reproduction catapults that used bows for their motive force, rather than the more common twisted rope. This might be something that would fit in with the look of an Easterling army, too.

The Khands were inspired by the Far East, but the Easterlings/ Men of Rhun were inspired more by the Persian Empire than anything else.

Check out a Hwacha on google i think it fits in well with the Easterlings. Also it would be fun to have a Seige engine capable of mass volley fire

I think the carroballistae are great.

I plan to use them with Arnor, the realm up there being rather deserted and maybe few trees around the Angmarim strongholds.

But for the easterlings they sound ideal too.

I plan to use these:

...and pick up several at Salute this year. I use some of their standard ballistae for dwarven ballistae.

The hwacha looks devastating... exactly the sort of punch that Rhun needs to make people fear them properly.

Hopefully the images should link now...
As well as cloud ladders this siege tower has been designed to maximise attacking power. It is loosely based on a famous cantilever/counterweight design by Leonardo Da Vinci
http://s186.photobucket.com/user/sukhe_ ... 6.jpg.html
It is designed to span wide moats and still permit scaling even at an incline...
