me doesn't remove backgrounds ... (I used various coloured papers that somehow match the character/colours)

I also don't know gimp but photoshop so I assume gimp uses similar tools

you should look for either
- (probably) a lasso symbol to put around the mini silhouette, the selection needs to get inverted, then you can delete the background (to prevent ugly colour single pixel at the edges feather the selection for 1 or 2 pixels before cutting the background)
- or if you have simple background look for sth like a wizard tool to choose the whole background colour area and remove that selection (that tool usually can be set to select are certain range of colour shades, e.g. it could be number of 20, so it would not only select one specific blue e.g. but also a few lighter and darker ones)

Try those tecniques, i've used them sucessfully, except i can't seem to change the checked background, mine seems to be a different version to those in the tutorials.

Hope this helps!

Yay Gimp!

I love the Gimp, it is all I use really, and why not? It is free!

To change the background can be tough depending what you are trying to cut out, but generally, all you have to do is add transparency to the colour that you don't want:

Once the transparency is added, create a background with another layer and blammo, you are set.

Long live the Gimp!

i used gimp untill i got my hands on macromedia's fireworks program. i find it invalluble, (bit expensive though, had to pay for it out of my pocket money!!!)

with most of these programs there will be a 'lasso' tool. lookis like a lasso!

and then u click and drag round the shape. (fw also has an easier version where u click points and it joins the points up for u for a smoother effect.

good luck 8)

He actually had something to add, so I hardly think he needs to apologise.

Thanks for making me aware to this topic Chazbo, I'll go and find me a gimp of my own. :)
