Post subject:  What camera do you use?

Hello,
I am going to get a camera sometime soon. I want it to be good for shooting figures, and also just for your average photo snapping. If you have a suggestion go ahead and tell, I am fairly lost with all the options out there. I would like to spend no more than 250$ canadian, but I don't mind gettting an older camera (cheaper  ) if it still takes good pictures.
The one I was borrowing from my sister was a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ2, I think it's from 2007-ish.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks. :)

I use a a Canon PowerShot SX120 IS. I don't remember the price, although I'm pretty sure it ranges somewhere around 100 USD. Any camera from the PowerShot series is pretty good in my opinion, but I'm no expert. Good luck ;)

I'm using my phone, Nokia N97 Mini. The photos are good enough when taken from 40-50cm distance with maximum zoom, and then cropping the edges.

Canon PowerShot SD600, it's pretty old but with the macro function can take very detailed shots.

A camera I got not long back which is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS16. I've not done much painting recently though so it has yet to be used for piccys of minis. I guess I should kick my ass into gear and change that sometime soon.

I’ve had a couple cameras with macro settings but I’ve found I’m more happy when I don’t use it. Instead I put the camera on a tripod about 2-3 feet back from the model and zoom in a little. Then I zoom and crop on the computer. My problem with macro settings is that I often get an over-bright model and if I’m taking a pic of more than one model it’s very hard to keep each in focus. I just can’t pull off a macro-setting shot on a Company, for example. But take a normal pic of that same group of models from a few feet back (where focus differences are miniscule) and zoom it post-production and you can get a very good up-close image (assuming the camera quality and image size are each good enough).

Canon - a 20D, 5D, 7D, IXUS210. I also have a Sony HD camcorder that takes 8.9 megapixel stills that I believe can get very close to the subject so I may use that for extreme closeups.
I have a heap of older 35mm, 645 and 617 film cameras also - photography was and still is a hobby, though this year has been extremely bad for me due to heavy work commitments early on and hospitalisation/recuperation.

A cannon eos 1000d, I find it to be a fantastic camera, especially for landscape photography.
Generally I use an 28-90mm lens but somtimes I also use one with a lot more zoom.

I use a Canon EOS450D. It makes taking great pictures really easy.

Panasonic Lumix FZ38. Takes good-quality shots, but...

I would strongly advise against getting a 'superzoom'. To my cost, I've found that they're quite susceptible to getting dust on the sensor, which is impossible to move without taking the camera apart. And, guess what - the sensor is almost always the most difficult thing to get at, necessitating the removal/disassembly of nearly everything else.

If you can afford it, get an SLR. If not, go for a good quality compact. They're even more susceptible to the dust problem (particularly Panasonic, IMO), but are far far easier to take apart and clean.

Same as Dagorlad - it is a lovely little camera. I take piccies from 2-3' (1m) distance then crop in Photoshop. Save resulting shot as JPG and publish. Simple procedure that takes only minutes from shooting to being up on the blog.

I use a Canon T3i Rebel with a Sigma 18-250 macro lens (and tripod) I'm a teacher and wrote a grant awhile back to get those items for documenting artwork. Since I'm in control of the equipment, it comes home with me from time to time :-D

I have a Cannon Power Shot SD 1000. It seems close to what several people here have. Any hints as to what settings to use when taking close up Macro shots?

I finally got a dslr camera this month, mostly for my job (architecture), but I got some great results in miniature photography and a huge difference with the compact. I got a sony α3000.
