Cool, enjoy it Callan. It's a pretty good game and a lot of fun. There are a few holes in the rules, but Rick Priestly's attitude towards that is very positive - there will be an Errata and FAQ sheet out in the fullness of time.

There's a lively discussion of the rules on the Warlord forum if you have any questions, or you could just ask in here and I'll see if I can shed any light on it for you.

What holes do you think are in the game?

There's a glaring one in the Close Assault rules, but it's easily fixed...

A unit cannot execute a Run order in difficult terrain, they can only Advance. But to Close Assault with a unit, you need to execute a Run order. So if your target is in a section of difficult terrain, you can never close assault it.

To fix it, the suggestion is to allow an close assault in difficult terrain using an Advance order instead of a Run order. It doesn't break the intention behind the rules and has the endorsement of Rock Priestly, so it will be in the errata.

Another oddity is that a rifle and some antitank weapons have a maximum range of 24" but a wheeled vehicle can move up to 48" in one turn if they stay on a straight road. So that means, in effect, that a jeep can out run a bullet. And even a tank, since they can move up to 36" along a straight road. The upshot of all this is that a Panzershrek team can't shoot at a tank if it's more than 24" away on a straight road, but the tank is allowed to Close Assault the Panzershrek team (so long as it stays on the road).

Weird that the playtesters didn't encounter these (pretty basic) situations.

...or is ignored or forgotten, still I doubt if it worse than the mess Andy Chambers made of Dust Warfare.

Hmm, Andy Chambers was also included in the credits for Bolt Action, but I don't know the extent of his involvement. It's disappointing to hear that you think Dust Warfare is a mess, it was the ruleset I was most looking forward to buying this year. Ho hum.

To their credit, Priestly and Cavatore both seem quite receptive to feedback on the Warlord forums (unlike their old friend Mad Wart from GW days). But their game designs always seem to be quite 'old school' compared to the stuff coming out from companies like Ambush Alley Games and the like.

Warlord is a site I check quite often as I like the minis for all periods though it is the Imperial Romans (Romanes Eunt Domus!) that catch my eye the most. But, lack of available time and space mean that my return to WW2 will be entirely 15mm or 1:100 scale Flames of War, though the majority of the stuff I have purchased so far is Plastic Soldier Company.
Nice counters folks!

Here comes the Latin-nerd in me: Dagorlad, I assume you mean "Romans go home", which would be "Romani ite domum". If you mean "The Romans go home" it's "Romani eunt domum".

Dagorlad, I have 2 BMW motorcycles with sidecar and riders from Warlord Games. I want to use them for Bolt Action, but I cannot find any statistics for them in the Bolt Action book. Do you know if the BMW motorcycles are used at all in Bolt Action? Have I missed a supplement to the rulebook? Thanks in advance for your help.

Motorcyles are treated as Infantry units, not vehicles, according to a paragraph on page 16, but they don't get a mention anywhere else in the book as far as I can see. I know that they are releasing a volume on the armies of Germany, which covers from the invasion of Poland to the Fall of Berlin, so I fully expect there will be details on the motorcycle recon units of the early war, as well as other units (like cavalry) that didn't get included in the core rulebook.

Thanks Dagorlad for your specific reply. I will reread page 16. By the way, I started on a palisade and guard house for Rohan almost 2 weeks ago using your wonderful design and instructions I found on the internet. I did not use your measurements because I made a decision early on to use what materials I had on hand with minimal cutting so my structure is not scale properly like yours. It does not look terribly bad -- I think :o Once I am finish, I will post a picture so you can have a good laugh.

Now back to Bolt Action. German Army book :?

If I was wanting to play scenarios related to the Soviet invasion of Manchuria, which game would you recommend: Bolt Action or Flames of War? Why?

Does anyone here play Bolt Action in 1/72 or is 28mm a hard and fast rule?

You can play BA in any scale you want, they use 28mm as that is the scale of their own models, you probably wouldn't have to adjust the rules at all.

What scale would you personally recommend for BA?

As BA is more of a skirmish game I would prefere 28mm especially as you can now get 28mm plastic soldiers and vehicles, so price isn't a big issue and the detail and quality is better than 20mm

Does anyone make quality 28mm plastic Japanese?

Also, if you've played FoW, which would work better for the Soviet invasion of Manchuria (August 1945)?

I think wargames factory has some samurai, though I'm not sure how good the figures are...
