Hi all

Inspired by a reading a few other 'beginner WIP' threads, I thought I would start my own, having been on the site a couple of weeks now. As a bit of background I bought the EFGT set in January and have been working my way through painting this over the last 9 months. I have completed the scenery and Goblins (as I thought these would be the simplest to paint first) and started on the Dwarves over the last couple of months (Whilst slowly building up my collection of paints). I am currently working on Gloin (my last dwarf to complete), then will just be left with Gandalf and Radagast to do from the set. I recently added a box of Grim Hammers to my collection and am also working on these to enter into the monthly painting challenge. The quality of painting on this site really amazes me but seeing the encouragement other beginners get from the community has given me the confidence to post.

Anyway please see a couple of WIP shots of Gloin. My camera is not the greatest but hopefully the pictures are not too bad quality (first ones a little dark I think):

I will hopefully post some pictures of some of the completed models I have already done and look out for the Grim Hammers in the monthly painting competition :)

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. They are appreciated and encouraging. Will be working in Gloin further this evening and will hopefully be able to finish him.

That's looking really nice so far. Have you only been painting a few months?

Wow! Your Gloin looks fantastic! 8)

Just out of interest, do you use GW/Citadel paints or another brand? (Assuming you don't grind your own pigments of course! :-D )

He is looking very good.
Better than I will probably do with mine if I can be bothered someday.

Greetings, and welcome to the One Ring!

Your Gloin is coming along very nicely. The red hair & beard is especially well done.

I am also working my way through Thorin's Company, as well. Good luck with finishing them all up!

First off welcome and secondly well done with the mini, the second photo shows you've done well with the skin tone and hair as well as your general shading and highlighting.

So many nice comments, thank you ALL so much for the feedback. I finished Gloin last night but have to finish off the base so will post a completed picture ASAP and hopefully some of the other dwarves too. Gloin is the dwarf I am most pleased with. Whilst waiting for some of base to dry I thought I would start painting my first ever piece of self made terrain which I made and primed a couple of weeks ago.

Image

I managed to buy some cheap walls from a well known auction site and thought I was buying some Osgiliath ruins. When they arrived they looked more dwarfish to me, so I decided to change them into a ruined dwarf room of some kind from deep in the mountains. I don't mind so much as I bought some Grim Hammers recently so thematically it will work with them. Again I will post a completed picture when I get to that stage.

@ Gandalf - Thanks & well spotted, yes a fellow Yorkie here from near Pickering

@ Gene - Thanks, yeah I got the box set in January and started with the scenery and Goblins as I thought I could do lots of painting with only a few colours. Then I started building up my paint collection and started on the Dwarves a few months ago. Its accelerated over the last 6-8 weeks though as my passion has grown and don't come to a halt as often by not having a colour I need.

@ Wise Old Elf - Thanks. I only use citadel colour at present, I have just started watering it down a little, as I have read that advice on here and am a bit more confident now.

Gloin is now finished which means all the dwarves from the EFGT set are now complete. I've attached some pictures below:

Gloin complete, looking at the picture I wonder if further highlighting of the coat is required, didn't really notice it on the model in the 'flesh'.

Image

The rest of the company, Oin & Gloin

Image

Fili & Kili

Image

Bifur, Bofur, Bombur

Image

Ori, Nori, Dori

Image

Balin, Dwalin (Just couldn't get Balins face how I wanted it, even after several attempts)

Image

Thorin, Bilbo (First 2 of the company I painted)

Image

Group Shot

Image

Selection of goblins (first models I painted)

Image

And finally my current WIP - final 4 Grim Hammers of the 12 I recently purchased.

Lovely work on these and they look great as a bunch. I wouldn't do an extra highlight on Gloin as his coat would look too similar to Balins and you need some differential.

Your terrain set is from the old GW ruins set. They used those for Osgiliath and a few others at the time, but you're right they don't look especially like any kingdoms of Men stuff.

Also congrats on painting so much of Thorin's company so quickly and so well done. You're a much faster painter than myself lol

Quick update time. I finished my Grim Hammers for the monthly competition. I'm pleased with these overall and really enjoyed painting them:

Then started on my first Uruk Hai. I'm quite pleased with the armour but think maybe the highlight on face is 'too strong'. Also need to do some extra bits on the base but don't have the materials just yet. The static grass I have would be a bit too green I think.
