They look great! You're definitely improving your skills.

You need to add a bit of water to your paint- it's going on too thick. You'll find it much easier to control when it has a bit of water in it, and is more of a milky texture than gloopy. Touch the brush to a bit of tissue paper before applying the paint, to prevent too much coming off the brush and dripping where you don't want it, or pooling too much.

Stripping miniatures: Dettol strips both plastic and metal, but the best product out there for stripping is Fairy Power Spray. Not sure if you get that in NZ, but I'm pretty sure you get Dettol. You'll need an old toothbrush and a few toothpicks to get all the gunk out of the cracks.

Love the elves. They're looking really good.

Working on converting my Easterlings up and making a bigger pike block. Below is the figures before I cut them up and fixed them up. Worked on the green stuff this weekend and you can see the results.

I hope I am getting better with the green stuff I have a clay shaper now and they are really useful.

These are the same guys I am entering for the September challenge hopefully I can get them painted before then, so stay tuned for updates. :)

Image

Here are the two archers, the left one is bend around a corner kind of works, I love the kneeling archer favorite of the lot.

Image

Here are some of the pikemen up. You can see my metal pike there cast it myself, a lot of detail lost in the casting but good enough.

Image

Swordsmen, used a few spare arms from the kataphrakt box that worked well and bent a shield arm around a bit.

Image

These are the last 2 I like the pike man here even though holding a pike like that would be incredibly awkward.

Those are some nice conversions. I haven't even started on my Easterlings yet, because I need to work up the courage to make some additional pikemen.

Got then painted up just before the month finished.

Here is Amdur Lord of Blades! I wanted the cloak to be different from the rest of the miniatures to make him stand out a bit from the red and gold. I tries to change the cloak a bit to late since I had already put down the base under colour, using the dark red that was there I tried and failed to give it a orange look. I should have redone the whole thing. I am thinking about a blue maybe? suggestions welcome Please.

I did however (successfully) make the inside of the cloak a warm yellow that works well I think.

Image

Image

Here are all the warriors.

Here we have a few pikes hard to squeeze them all into a small image.

Image

Love these guys, the kneeling archer looks great. You can see the wood grain on the shields you can still see a bit of PVA drying on the swordsman on the right opps.

Image

Here you can see the clothing detail. I ended up making them a bit purple on accident adding to much white to the redy brown colour. I gave a wash of red which helped a bit but I think it looks good anyway and suits them thoughts anyone?

Image

And here is the last of them. :)

Actually the colour is very close to the movies' props, I think.
Subtle conversions, apart from the one kneeling (my favourite also), with all making a very nice warband.

The effort you've put into making all these unique poses has definitely paid off! Amdur is such a superb model and I like how you've made yours stand out

Hi all, I have a very ambitious goal by the end February 2015.

I have looked at all my Minas Tirith army and decided to try complete the army by the end of Feb. I have finished my carpentry course and have a bit more free time than before, although I will have work soon which will take all that time away again.

I have a long list of what I want to do; there is a lot and I think I am in over my head but good luck to myself :P

Want to do

Heroes

Aragorn, King Elessar need to Buy the Mounted version
Boromir, Captain of the white tower
-Paint Banner
-Make and paint the mounted version
Make and paint Damornd, Ranger of Ithilien
Captain of Minas Tirith
-Make a Bow Version
-Paint the Shield Version
Make 2 Engineer Captains
Paint a King of men

Warriors

Warrior of Minas Tirth
-Make a Warhorn guy
-Paint a Banner guy
Knight of Minas Tirith
- 2 more with shields
Citadel Guard
-Paint 4 with Bow covert 2 to add variety to the poses
-Paint 2 with Spear
-Need to buy at least 3 more with Spear
Guard of the Fountain Court
-Convert 8 to have Shields and more interesting poses
Osgiliath Veterans
Convert 12 of these guys.

That is 41 models, 4 mounted and I want to convert 28 of these.

This should be the goal for the end of next year if I get this done it will be amazing!

I've just read through this thread and the improvement through it is amazing. Those Easterlings are stunning.

How did you do the kneeling archer conversion? And also, what did you use to cast the spear?

Its mainly due to my photography improving :P

The spears I made a mold out of silicon I think or something I can't remember what it is called. I used pewter and melted it down and poured it in the mold it is a two part mold for the spears.

The mold was not very smooth I had to file it down and I had a lot of failures at it. I lost confidence in the material I used and I haven't made another one.

Only one of the spears above is cast the rest are the real deal.

The kneeling archer look at the unpainted version. Cut and chop the legs and use some green stuff.

So I have been doing these for about a month now I have finally finished them.

8 Converted Fountain court guards all with shields.
I hate that these guys were made with basically two poses and the two poses are very similar, I have wanted to convert them so I did some research and looked at what other people have done before.

There is is not much you can do without cutting them up a whole lot.

Here are the two most simple conversions, chucking a shield on their left arm.

Image

Here in the middle we have a left handed soldier what! :P just move the shield on the free right hand and the spear fits nicely facing upwards.
For the guy on the left I cut the spear in half for him to hold the spear in one hand.
The right guy cut the left hand off and made a new arm for him. Cutting his hand off also left some marks on his front that I have done my best to fix.

Image

View from the back (not much to see here)

Image

Here are the cool ones.
Guy on left cut his head off and made him look another way, and cut his arm off and reconstructed his arm to point his spear out, I am very pleased with his hand.

Guy in middle I cut his legs off and needed to redo his whole clothing and chain-mail bit which worked really well. I am super pleased with how he turned out.

The right guy I cut his arm off as well and made him look like a standing guard (which is what a fountain guard is meant to be) The sleeve on the arm looks really bad which you can't see it is all bumpy and misshaped. He also has a gorilla hand. But I am still pleased with him.

Image

Here you can see the cloaks which all worked well and look quite smooth.

The middle guy has such beautiful folds; as his cloak drapes on the ground :-D You can also see he has a shield.

You can also see the armor on the arm on the guy on the right. It is quite hard to make a wrist guard, the shoulder guards took some time but I got there and it looks great.

Image

So this is my first time using wire armature (if that is the right word) I used it for the arms I made and it is really helpful.

It is also the first time I have done a cloak on the ground and that has worked well; gives me confidence that I can do a cloak flowing down on a horse now.

Its the first time my chain mail has looked actually good.

Thoughts and advice guys?

Here are my Guards of the fountain court painted and finished. You have seen the conversions so no need to explain that.

I have opted for a blue colour scheme. Blue for the cloaks, with the rest much the same as the game workshop scheme.

With the edge trim with the pattern on it, the GW scheme had a swiggley line I tried this but it is to hard so I did the Zig Zag which works quite well.

Also I was trying to decide to paint shields red or Blue, I was thinking red as Boromir has a red shield (for unknown reasons) and red does not come into the Minas Trirth colour palette except for King Elessar. So I thought the red would work for these high up warriors but then I thought Red would be too cluttered, so I stuck with blue to fit with the rest of the palette.

They remind me a lot of Dol Amroth but I don't have those warriors nor do I plan on getting them any time soon.

Here are my first three units.

And the back

Next three.

Here you can see the painted folded cloak that looks quite well.
