Wow New Years really upsets plans. Missed the competition deadline, but back into it today. Worked on the coat mostly, adding shades and highlights.

Light is a bit harsh, it exaggerates the contrasts, but you get an impression at least.

Didn't expect to get this done today, but I lost the run of myself. Few bits i'm not happy with such as the mouth and the snow, which I'll replace eventually when I get better stuff, but overall it turned out as good as I expected and I learned a few new things. Best part is that I've managed to make something nice out of what appeared to be a dog of a model (based on the GW paintjob). I'd recommend this sculpt to anyone interested.

Ahhh man sooo good! Some seriously fine detail. I think I may have to purchase one for myself now. Beautiful model.

When will you be starting the mounted version?

Thanks. I don't know when I'll do the mounted one. I'm reluctant to spend time filling and assembling and all that. Planning on re-doing the Fellowship first, then Thorin's company. After that who knows. I can take a pic of the mounted one unpainted if you're curious about the sculpt.

Thanks kindly.

Going back to basics and re-doing the Fellowship, and some of the earliest miniatures. Unfortunately my original gandalf has been missing a staff for many years, but I got one in a job lot. As you can see it's in a sorry state but I got it well on the way to redemption. Hoping to get some OSL in on this one, but not too drastic. If I get a Khazad-Dum version I'll take it to the extreme. Keeping the face dark for now.

The Bard looks really great (is he a bit more tilted than usual??), but saving this absolute beast of a Brian Nelson sculpt of Gandalf is the highlight of your recent work.

P.S. Yes, I still believe that most of Brian Nelson first models for the range are still the greatest ones.

Bard is a little more tilted than normal, which wasn't intentional, but it turned out ok. I agree on the quality of the initial run of models, though I dont remember who sculpted what. I remember being a leak of it in a magazine in 2001 and them and there deciding to skip warhammer and wait on lotr. Seems unusual now but the realism of them blew everyone away. Doing this one took me right back to when I first did it, probably the second model I painted ever. Anticipating the release of the first film.

This was the very first model I bought for lotr, way back on release day in 2001. It's my desert island mini - very sentimental. I hesitated to strip it, but it was in pretty bad shape. In the end the right leg was broken in 3 places, and the ring needed to be re-sculpted. Here's how it was a few days ago, and the progress I've made this morning. Likely to be my January competition entry. Quite happy with how it's going, though I've lost good daylight now. More tomorrow.

So far so good Gene. This particular model always reminds me of former one ring member BilboOfTheWhiteTower and holds great sentimental value to me too.

Nice start Gene.
I think a touch of shading will help the red. Half a degree darker shade along the middle of the lapel to help the edges stand out. Do the same down the front of the jacket.
Face looks great as Its hard to capture on a photo just how small it is, it's damn microscopic !!!

Cheers lads. The jacket was only given a quick once over at that stage, I've done a bit more shading, but won't get stuck in until tomorrow. I want the coat to be very dark.

Great, especially his face! Love that model, painted one as a gift two years ago, need to hunt couple for myself at some point.
