Hi all, it has been quite awhile. I was away at school and obviously was not able to paint anything. Not sure if I will be able to do anything before I go back but expect to see new work from me mid-December!

So I'm continuing to experiment with my paints, brushes, and techniques. I'm pretty pleased with my outcomes for the break I've taken although these took me HOURS over DAYS. I have to keep repainting over mistakes that I make with color matching or stray strokes. I got the bases done too which was nice! I decided not to weather the cloaks on the most recent 2 models because I spent a lot of time trying to get the layers and highlights of the cloak.

Please give me feedback! Comments and criticism welcome!

They look really cool all together, but there is one thing that stood out for me. That is the contrast on the clothing. I think you can push it even more to make the figure's pop by going darker in the shadows, and for the highlights, you really should make more of he cloth with the brightest highlight.

Just received some Uruk scouts which I've begun to get onto their bases. Will get some photos up soon!

I need some suggestions for brush on primer. I've used black spray in the past but I don't have anywhere outside to spray now.

Got these guys on their bases and added some cork shards and sand to the bases. I went through about 5 bottles of superglue doing this... How do you guys attach sand to the bases?

I always use PVA - Paint it on with a paintbrush all over the top of the base, then dip into a tray of sand until it's covered, then leave to dry for a few hours.

This is how I used to do it, but my basing material would often fall off. Now I coat the base in superglue, dip it, let it dry, and then douse it with super glue again to lock it. I end up with a solid amount of base texture but I like it because I don't like painting the boots and I like the depth it gives them.

See the goblin done with PVA and the warrior or rohan with superglue.

I will say that I think I did Gimli with PVA and he's held up well.

Here's a bit of a closer up on my basing with some cork rocks on the Uruk scouts.

edit: the cork seems to be lost under the sand. Some of the others have more distinct formations, they'll be on here soon enough.

Could you expand on this a bit, do you mean on the green cloaks or the red tunics? And maybe some photos of what you mean? I appreciate the feedback!

My Vallejo surface primer finally showed up! I have no excuses now... Any tips on brushing this primer on? I've got plastic and metal minis to do, will the approach be any different?

These are the models I'll be trying to work on for the Rohan/Isengard challenge

Went ahead and brushed the primer on to the plastic scouts. It was rather thin and flowed nicely. I tried to give some of the minis a lighter primer coat to see if I could retain more detail as the brush felt like it was slopping paint on there sometimes and it would dry kind of quickly - within a couple minutes.

Edit:

And some base coating on 4 of the scouts. I don't usually have a specific gameplan or technique in mind when I get started. This time, however, I'm going to layer on some dry brushing and highlights everywhere before washing the whole thing with black, hitting it all with another round of highlights and then washing the different parts with color specific washes.

Highlighted, washed the whole thing in black and highlighted again. I'm not sure how to get the deeper parts black and how to ease the highlights without washing out the whole thing as if it was covered in dirt. I just ordered a Winsor and Newton series 7 size 1 so hopefully that will help with the stray marks in the highlights in the future. Should I look into getting some real washes? It seems like the ones I make by mixing water and paint never work correctly...

I'd like some suggestions on how to deal with these too harsh highlights. Fill in the area with a lighter layering collar and then do a full Nuln Oil wash?

I would usually suggest starting with a colour much closer to the main one - then increasing the brightness until you feel it's right to the eye - for highlighting I mean.

Yes, definitely. I generally try to stick to this principle but I clearly got a little ahead of my self here. Do you have any thoughts on dealing with this issue? I'm thinking if I lighten up the areas, in general, the highlights won't stick out too much - a wash should tie it together, and then I can re-highlight if needed.
