Thanks for the comments guys. The problem with my job is its hard on the hands ( I load gas cylinders onto trailers and they're real heavy!!!) and for the first couple of months my hands hurt like hell and swell up so I'm having problems gripping the brush.. serves me right really for being off for 8 months and letting my hands get as soft as a babies feet. Not too worry must push on ...... must finish Legolas for painting challenge.

@Tabletop_Heroes - your absolutely right it is a shame that these things interfere with what we want to do - we should all get paid a wage for painting our backlogs, at least then we might get them painted before we are 127 years old huh?

@Red Corsairs, Draugluin, BW , Thanks guys :)

You hit the nail on the head there mate it does have its plus sides ... increase the backlog further :D

@King Ondoher - Mate the only way I am going to be able to play as elves is if you pull your finger out and paint an evil army :P

Finally finished Legolas for the painting challenge. Thought I would use the opportunity to do my second 60mm scenic base for the non-combatant fellowship models. I took a few pictures of the base in its WIP state. Here we go....
Image Image Image Image

Picture one pretty self explanatory lol ... a blank 60mm base
Picture 2 - I wanted to raise the ground level a little so just cut some pieces of wood and glued them in place.
Picture 3 - Disguising the edges of the woodand adding some texture to the smooth surfaces using bark for rock faces and gravel/ stones to cover the large flat areas of wood. I also added some steps at this stage to the front of the raised area.
Picture 4 - More smaller bits of sand / gravel added over the base again just to break it up a little. Decided the areas I wanted to have stone floor and smoothed on some milliput modelling putty with a very wet sculpting tool, keep the putty very wet and scrunch up some alluminium foil ( kitchen foil) and press into the wet putty leaving a nice worn stone impression . Once dry take a sharp ended file and scratch brickwork into the putty if you so wish.
Image
And the finished base, painted and flocked and with water and waterfall added. Hope you guys like it :)

Next up was to add Legolas to his base.

As usual C & C most welcome - but be gentle lol

Are you able to paint the flowers and bark ? They seem less detailed than your beautiful work.

Awesome work again DMS, the painting challenge is going to be hard to choose. Look forwards to the rest of the Fellowship (if you're doing them(?))

Nice DMS! The base is fantastic, I think it's my favorite one that you've done so far. Legolas also looks very nice, though one thing I noticed was that his pants look like they were rushed a little bit, or something like that. I can't really find the right words to describe it looks like to me, but it the highlights look a little sudden, but that just might be the pic. It still looks very nice though, and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if you win the painting challenge again.

I hadn't thought of trying to paint the flowers tho to be honest I got these flowers cheap in a kit and they were AWFUL to use and I don't recommend them ... I won't use them again .. bleh!! The bark now that you mention it could do with some highlights. thanks for your comments mate, much appreciated. ( will be posting some pics on TLA later which may be of interest to you :E )

Thanks mate - I will be doing a scenic 60mm base version of all nine fellowship models preferably non-combatant poses ... so far Gimli and Legolas done

Thanks POW your so right ..... the whole model was rushed lol - I have had very little painting time lately and have been trying to squeeze this model in whilst giving my full attention to some commission work I am doing. I'd love to win the challenge but their is some seriously tough competition this month... everybody is getting sooooo good  :D

Great job. I really like your idea of making these nice big scenic bases for the 'neutral' poses... :yay:

Great job on the lovely flowery base. Legolas - much better than I could ever do, but I can't help but feel his hands could do with an extra highlight. They look a bit dark compared to the face in the photo at least.
Been doing some more on your sculpting order. I am aiming to get something finished by the end of next week.

 Great stuff Dave - lookin forward to the new sculpts!!!!
Re. hands - I know exactly what you mean, The Legolas sculpt is horrible , his right hand there are no clearly defined fingers, I had to literally paint them where I thought they should be then I think my brown ink wash on them was a little heavy but hey you live and learn.

Thanks for the comments guys :)

I love the stone paving, that method sounds so simple. Is that how you do the flagstone bases on your gaming minis? I think I might try that out if and when I do a Dwarf army.

love it. bases are getting better if that was ever possible. that extra dash off colour with the flowers brings it to life and little water fall is a great touch!!!

Where did you buy them (I want to buy flowers to use myself, but I don't want to end up buying the same as you did if they are that awful lol)

As for the painting, stunning as usual. Your work never cease to amaze me.

To be honest I can't remember where it was I got those particular flowers from as I have had them for quite some time, they are just flock glued onto wire, they may have been ok when they were new but as I've had them a while a lot of the flock just fell off. Check out the NOCH range of flowers, much better IMO. Thanks for your kind words.
