I know, eh. I've contemplated that before I took that direction when I first started painting him, don't know why though, maybe I thought it look cooler. The flash on my camera though brightens the colours, as you might expect, x10.

Finished Balrog. Tried adding a pillar of smoke to the base but was a no go unfortunately. Maybe later I'll try to add it (like in 5 years).

Outstanding Balrog! I like the heat spots on the wings and the nostrils look like a furnace. You captured that really well.

I like the shadow on the Balrog's base. Was that intentional? Give's it that look of advancing shadows.

that balrog is so cool. In particular, I like the dark skin, it seems like he is trying to rekindle his flames from being doused by water.

Thank you all for the comments.

The shadow on the base was intentional. I painted and dry brushed all of the base a few times. Added a few extra dry brush highlights at the "lighted" areas, black wash heavily at the back. I wanted to add fire effects with small pillars of smoke but couldn't get it to work.

I was confused on what to do about his skin, considering. And I opted for more red than putting in more orange and/or yellow for his veins, but either look is fine. Like mentioned one looks cooler while the other hotter and igniting.
