Who or what determines in the normal game ( sgb not wotr) what units to take in my armylist? Is it just because of the authenticity or are there any explicit rules on how to combine units?

Yes, you can find those rules in the legion of middle earth book.

The very basics are that there are several army lists each having certain heroes and troop types. To be able to ally them you have to have a hero from both lists being allied and you must have a 33% archer limitation for both seperate lists (e.g, you couldn't have 24 orcs and a captain and then 12 haradrim archers and a chieftan because the Harad list is not obeying the 33% limit).

Those are the basics but I don't think I'm allowed to tell you any more.

Assuming you have the ability to get the book, there's a handy companion spreadsheet a gentlemen made that will allow you to build a LoME legal army, the only thing you might be missing are the profiles (which you can find on Games Workshop's website under the Gaming Articles portion of the SBG articles). Google "lome excell spreadsheet", the person who made it is named "Lonelyknight". Great, handy resource.

You've never heard of copyright law?

Sure, but thematically some armies could never have met, such as Numenorians and Tower of Ecthelion.

Thanks for the link, avenger.... ehhm i wouldn't see the copyright thing that dramatic i mean iam pretty sure it wouldn't be legal to post photos of the whole book [....] but if you own a book you can tell anybody whats written in it as long as you name the owner of the copyright [....] Thanks frog i know what you mean ... so there are rules because of the authenticity. By the way i like your mr.weaver avatar 8)
