Well I'm new to game workshop and to table top gaming. I have recently become interested buying into the LOTR game and just wanted some advice off you lads.

I have chosen to go with Gondor as my main army and wanted to know which is the best set to start with and which paints are required to get the best outcome.

Thanks lads 8)

I would start off with a box set of Warriors of Minas Tirith. These guys have solid defense and form the core of quite a few gondor armies.

Welcome to the Game! :) You're in for a TON of fun!!

I agree with jebbo - start off with a box of the Warriors of Minas Tirith. This will give you 8 models with swords and shields, 8 models with spears and 8 models with bows. Also, they are plastic - so it'll be a cheap way to get started!

As for paints:

MUST HAVES:
Dwarf Flesh
Scorched Brown
Boltgun Metal
Chaos Black
Bleached Bone

NICE FOR HIGHLIGHTS AND OTHER STUFF:
Elf Flesh
Bestial Brown
Mithril Silver
Flesh Wash
Snakebite Leather
Shining Gold
Dark Flesh
Shadow Grey
Codex Grey

There are quite a few painting guides for Gondor all over the place - and plenty of pictures up here on the site of ppl doing the warriors. Good luck with your painting ~ and just remember to take your time and ENJOY yourself! :)

Once you get that done, I'd consider going for some Knights of Minas Tirith or Rangers of Gondor! (and they pocketbook will get thinner - and your fun will grow! LOL)

Greetings, TheHornOfGondor, and welcome to the One Ring!

My recommendation for someone just starting the game would be the following purchases.

1x Box of Warriors of Minas Tirith (WoMT)
1x Box of Minas Tirith Commanders

These two will form the core of just about any Gondor army you put together. From there you can choose what you would like to add: Heroes like Boromir & Faramir, Rangers, Cavalry, Elite troops, Fiefdom warriors. Gondor is flexible enough to suit most any taste.

Because of the very limited palette that Gondor uses, you can actually gen away with very few paints. The following would allow you to paint the above purchases and form a pretty good basis for your paint collection:

--Chaos Black spray paint
--Codex Grey
--Fortress Grey
--Skull White
--Badab Black (Wash)
--Chainmail Silver
--Shining Gold
--Scorched Brown
--Bestial Brown
--Dwarf Flesh

I know that sounds like a lot of paints, but those colors will be used on nearly every miniature you paint.

If you have any other questions, just let us know. We'll be happy to help!

Thanks lads for the great help :) I was also wondering if anyone knows any sites I can get some of the paint/materials (cheap) to craft my men? Sorry to be a pest but also does anyone know any sites that sell the box sets at a lower price?

Once again thanks for your help lads 8)

Maelstrom Games is a very highly regarded independent retailer with good prices. You may wish to try purchasing your miniatures from them. :)

Welcome to the site!

If you're in the US, I would recommend ordering from ChaosOrc's superstore http://www.chaosorc.com/ . Their prices are about the same as Maelstrom's, but some of their stuff is a terrific bargain. (Some $15.00 blisters are $6.50) Paints are about $2.60 apiece as opposed to $3.70 each retail. :)

Thanks once again lads, I'm actually from the UK (England, Manchester) so I think my best bet is that Maelstrom site. I really want to get into making scenery etc so I will try and pick up some paint when I visit my local Model shop :)
