Post subject:  Proxies?

Hey all,

After a long hiatus from the game, my friends and I have come together to begin setting up a Total-War style campaign that adds in RPG elements as well.

Unfortunately, even after stripping armies down to basics, the costs still looked immense. Not to bag on GW prices, but quite simply so much of what we still needed was out of financial reach.

That was until I found proxies. By making some flavorful lore alterations, I was able to substitute a large number of my forces with proxies and not feel like they were out of place.

However...

I am still looking for proxies of:

:gimli: Dwarves
:lurtz: Uruk-Hai
:legolas: Elves
:orc: Orcs and Goblins (Mordor, Gundubad, and Moria)

These are much harder to find as many 28mm minis are Historical, and a lot of Fantasy simply looks far too goofy for the more realistic style of LotR SBG. Even some Chaos Marauders, which I picked up to use for Dunland, look absolutely goofy... already drafting a description to at least put my mind to rest as to why there are big Conan-esque goofs running amuck in Rohan.

Any help is greatly appreciated :D

Wargames Factory Orcs are based on the Angus McBride drawing for LOTR

Getting second hand ones is a good idea if you are on a budget. There were also other manufactures of LOTR minis that you can still get and use. Such as the Harlequin line which Scotia Grendel have

Other than that there is the Heritage line which were designed after the 1970's movie which you can still get under the Rings of the Lord name http://classicminiatures.net/info/

For modern available miniatures that fit you are stuck with historical one as you will find most fantasy too large. I have seen many topics on using historical figures such as vikings or norman knights. Perry Miniatures will be the same scale and they have quite a few plastic boxed set that could be used.

Thank you much. Both those Orcs look great!

In terms of of historical models, I am using both vikings, Norman knights, and even Macedonian Phalangites for various Men models. However, do you think any could fit other races?

I am thinking that maybe at least Elves could be proxied with historical models as they are overall very human like in appearance, but it would have to look right I suppose.

I agree. You can usually get many armies on the cheap from ebay. Good old ebay. A lot of people have pooh-poohed the wargames factory orcs for having an unrealistic muscle tone, and they were alot cheaper before they were sold on the sprue. They might make okay Morannon troops though.

Other options would be to pick up minis from the lotr wizkids game or the hex battle game. If you do this you can remove the existing click base and out them on a standard slotta base

If you're looking for just rank and file - eBay is your best bet still I think. Thankfully GW still stock the old plastics for basic troops - if they were to vanish one day prices would shoot up over night.

If it appeared on the SBG magazine it seems to always be available at a reasonable price - so all the early plastics and the most common captains and heroes.
