Hi all,

I'm new to the forum so I hope I am posting in the right place. I was wondering whether anyone could give me an opinion as to the quality of the newer Finecast figures and whether they are still full of errors? I am specifically thinking of the new Gundabad Orcs and Laketown personalities. Also the Mirkwood Spiders - they look fiddly - are they likely to be a nightmare to put together?

Also I really want to get the Cave Drake model but can't find any opinions about it. Is it well cast in Finecast and does it go together well? I've never had a chance to see it up close so I would also value any opinions on whether it is a model worth getting?

Really appreciate any help!

I inherited a handful of finecast minis, I havent started painting them yet, but they appear fine. I've read a lot about them and the biggest legit complaints i've heard about them were that the first wave of castings didn't always cast correctly. However, those failed casts, if returned to GW, were promptly replaced. Other then that the only other complaints I've heard were unsubstantiated and were based soley on the fact that the reviewer didn't like the material.

Oh, and the bubble issue (which arguably is a failed casting). Lots of bubbles in the original runs. However, I haven't heard much about the bubbles lately. Never the less, finecast is officially "dead." I've gone over their entire website, even performed a site search for the term "finecast" and came up with a goose egg. If GW is still using finecast they don't call it that anymore. In fact the only non plastic material they use is a fine resin to produce a "finely detailed resin cast miniature."

I've bought Thorin, Erebor captain and Grimhammer captain. No problems with the casting. Found the weapons and such a little brittle though.

Resin by nature is brittle. That is to be expected.

The best reason ever not to buy them.

What I mean is that if one is going to purchase a resin or finecast mini they best be aware that the miniature will be brittle. More so than metal or plastic. And if they are willing to make that concession, then there is nothing wrong with the material. Now bonesium on the other hand. Now *that* is a great inexpensive medium for miniatures!

All the Hobbit range finecast models that I've purchased have been great. My LOTR range ones are roughly 70/30 (bad to good) in terms of stuff missing from the models (weapons, helmet spikes, and in one case half a captain's hand) and the other bunch were near perfect. So it's a bit of a gamble but GW is good about replacing them (even if the replacements share the same problems at times)

70% near perfect 30% so poor they had to be replaced several times. Near perfect is not without flaws. FineCast will never mean the same.

Bonesium, :) That is as funny as Dwarvenite :-D

Personally speaking I have really enjoyed painting the Finecast range. I am new to the hobby so don't feel I have any right to bemoan the replacement of metal mini's. The main problem with the finecast range is the price, I believe they should pass on the savings to the consumer, instead of saying, 'look we're making them better, for cheaper, but you have to pay more, because theyre so good'. Maybe Im just cynical, but the pricing on the hobbit range has been outrageous

Frankly, it's a proven marketing technique. As sales decrease you increase prices to make up for lost product sales.

meh. the first finecast figures i got were like crochet - full of holes, as bofur would say. i would say it improved over time but there were still defects here and there.

the only advantage it has over metal, for me, is that there's a degree of flexibility to finecast, so it snaps back into shape. metal can break if you're not careful.

I wish we had a way of checking the sales figures of the lotr and hobbit range, a few people say they are struggling others say they are thriving, hard to judge who is right

Thriving compared to warhammer. Dying compared to 40k
