 It's always time for an Azog thread

It's a funny one this as allegedly I was killed at the battle of Azanulbizar when obviously I survived to be here with you now ... lol

I was pleased the Azog character was in the film but perhaps a bit sad that PJ didn't stick closer to the book. If they wanted a big bad then they could have had Bolg his son out hunting perhaps, or done a made up Orc (goblin) like they did with Lurtz. I guess since Bolg will appear at the Battle of the Five Armies they didn't want to lessen the impact of Bolg in the final film. Also Bolg was based further North then the Great Goblins realm so I guess it's a bit far to be involved at this stage of the story.

Am I correct in thinking that Smaug might feature in films two and the beginning of three, and perhaps the necromancer too ? Then Bolg rounds it off at the end of film three. I guess PJ was a bit light on baddies for the first film so for the average non-fan movie-goer it adds a bit more interest.

I kinda doubt that the outsting of the necromancer and the BoFA will be in the same movie. I think we'll get the BoFA in the second movie, and then the necromancer battle in the third. (Or maybe the other way around) The only way I could see them both being in the same movie was if the necromancer battle was not that big or long....

I believe Gandalf turned up right before the start of the BotFA. He was so late because he was in Dol Guldur before. So if anything, the Dol Guldur battle would be in the second movie and the BotFA in the last one (unless PJ thinks it's a good idea to change that too.. :? ).

Hmm, I had forgotten that. I think PJ could easily change that, it wouldn't be that hard to find some excuse....I just think that it will be easier to blend any in between stuff (not from the hobbit or from lotr) to the third movie if it is already mostly stuff not from the hobbit, like the necromancer fight. It would be kinda wierd to have the BoFA and then have the second half of the movie bridgeing stuff.....

I was just thinking about movie pacing to be honest.
Let's break down the movies into various major bad guys.

Movie 1
Smaug
Azog
Trolls
Great Goblin
Gollum

Movie 2
Azog
Mirkwood spiders
Necromancer
Smaug

Movie 3
Smaug
Necromancer
Bolg

You can see that he could have Smaug in all three movies (flashback in the first), then up until he flies off to burn Laketown, then being finished off by Bard in the third. The Necromancer is a brooding threat and it takes the White Council time (due to Saruman) to get organised enough to drive him out.

Movie two could feature the end of Azog, the Mirkwood spiders and Gandalf sussing out Dol Guldar and barely escaping with his life. Then Smaug up until he flies off to Laketown.

Finally Smaug is finished off in Movie three, the Necromancer is ousted by the White Council and Bolg appears at the Battle of the Five Armies. A nice spread of baddies and you don't need to spoil the natural progression.

You're probably right, but who knows what P.J. will pull out of his mysterious bag of random tricks?

And may I say, I far prefer Merry Christmas-hatted Azog Avatar to Big Bad Pale Ork CGI Azog. :orc:

Azog was okay, he looked cool...but thats about it. So long as Azog dies early in the 2nd film and then Bolg takes over as the baddie then im fine..but if they cut Bolg out any further then I will be pretty unhappy.

I wssnt to fond of Azog either, but i guess iets true. he was in there for the mainstream public. those that arent (big) fans of the books story line. for me less action would have been fine (though i do like action). i would know there is still plenty comming....

I liked the idea of Azog giving the dwarves an impetus as well as providing a real, overriding threat for the company to deal with. The enmity between Thorin and Azog really added to the film. That being said, I think Azog looks rather stupid. Besides being full CGI (which is hard to stomach after glancing at the superb Uruk-Hai costumes just a second ago), I'm not the biggest fan of his overall character design. Additionally, everything Azog provides in this film could have been accomplished by Bolg. Either way, you have a powerful revenge theme. Also, didn't care much for Thorin's fight with him at the end--the entire movie had built him up to be an absolutely epic hero, and I think he got a horribly raw deal in the duel.

In my opinion, it would be awkward to introduce Azog as this ultimate, apparently extremely important villain for the first film, leave that unresolved by the end of the film, and then kill him off. He'll need to be at the BoFA imo. I don't think an audience would respond well to a mid-series switch-up/tale of father revenge with Bolg after the set-up and establishment Azog was given. But where does that leave Bolg?

The film great, here is all I want: Dain to kill Bolg, and Thorin to kill Azog. I really like the revenge theme, but I also want Dain to prove he is just as great as Thorin by killing Bolg. I reckon Bolg will turn up to tie in with the necromancer plotline and Azog will remain the prominent villain for the company, with the two orcs joining up at the battle of the five armies and hopefully getting owned togeva.

I hate his guts. Really, what was the point of having him in here? You could have achieved so much more by just more or less sticking to the book, killing Azog outside Moria and having Bolg take his role.

I would prefer to have Beorn kill Bolg (possibly during the White Council story) and have Azog be the one to kill Thorin. Then Dain (possibly on boar, according to rumors) come carging in and positively butcher Azog and his orc guard.

Well, someone has to kill Thorin, I would rather it be Azog (with much more of a fight than we got at the end of the movie) than a random orc.

Why not Bolg, if he doesn't get slaughtered by Beorn as you hope.

Well, if Beorn doesn't kill Bolg in Dol Guldur (which I admit is likely), then I do hope it is Bolg who kills Thorin.

Why can't it be: Thorin kills Azog; Bolg kills Thorin; Beorn kills Bolg.

It should not be done any other way. I will be dissapointed if it does, and I actually loved the 1st film.
