Post subject:  Backlog Reduction Oath

Greetings, everyone.

I passed a significant milestone this month when I painted my 300th miniature. Now, I have over 700, so my collection is still only about 40% painted, however, my goal is to get the percentage much higher by year's end. We're only a few days into the year, so now is a good time to get started on our hobby goals.

A couple of years ago, we had a Backlog Reduction Oath, in which we all pledged to paint more miniatures than we purchased, but we did not place any sort of time limit on the project, and so it eventually fizzled. I would like to revive that project, and make a game out of it in the process. Here is what I propose:

Anyone who would like to participate may take the Backlog Reduction Oath, pledging to paint more miniatures in a given month than are purchased. At the end of each month, you will report the number of minis painted, and the number of minis purchased. If you have painted more miniatures than you have purchased you will earn a 1 point for the month. If the number of minis that you have painted is twice the number you purchased, then you will gain 2 points, and so on, to a maximum of 5 points for the month. If anyone breaks the oath, then they will be penalized in the same manner. At the end of the year, we will tally up everyone's points and there will be some sort of prize, to be determined at a later date.

When counting up the number of models painted/bought, we will use the following system to make it fair, as some larger models take much more effort to paint. The following types of models count as follows:

1 model -- Standard Infantry
2 models -- Cavalry
3 models -- Small Monsters (Cave Trolls, Goblin King, Shade, etc.)
6 models -- Medium Monsters (Mordor Trolls, Gulavhar, Ents, Great Eagles, Khandish Chariots, etc.)
12 models -- Large Monsters (Fell Beasts, Beast of Gorgoroth, Dragons, Drakes, Mumakil, etc.)

My basis for this is the time that it takes to paint a model of that size, and using a 12-man warband as the basis of the calculations.

Also, I guess we'll need a deadline for reporting, so you have until the 5th of each month to report on the previous month. That means January's report is due by February 5th, or you get zero points for the month!

Sound like fun? Who's in?

I'm in! This was actually a New Year's resolution. paint 2 for each 1 bought.

As of this weekend I think I'll be on target. Had a bit of an eBay splurge, but also batch painted 36 elves, and am slightly more than half way through 48 Uruk :D.

Oh, and i'm calling it "Scaling the Orod Mith" :D

I'm in! Last year I purchased tons of LOTR stuff before it going OOP...my bank account didn't like that quite as much...Therefore and because I only painted a handful minis in 2013 I hope that this helps me to paint more and to reduce the backlog and hopefully be able to play a few games with all painted miniatures! So far it looks good, I started painting 4 minis and haven't bought any!

what about broke people (like me) who don't buy miniatures for months at a time. painting 5 miniatures or more and getting the max points points per month seems unfair to the people who get miniatures all the time. Just seems kind of unfair in my opinion. you could add a rule so that anyone who doesn't buy miniatures is penalized by only getting a maximum of lower maximum points a month

I'd like to participate, I've been playing since the beginning of the game and my backlog is rather massive as well lol

Having lost a big bunch of my half painted backlog to theft, and still planning on finishing an outstanding project...

I am in, but I have no idea what my backlog even looks like nowadays. Need to do a big minis census, see precisely what I lost, precisely what I still have.

I don't think that's unfair. If the point is to reduce the size of your backlog then I would say that you are doing exactly that, even if you don't purchase any minis that month. If you guys think we should have a penalty, we could divide the points by half, but I really don't think it's necessary. This is primarily just a fun way to motivate us to paint!

As long as I don't have to update my sig every month, I'm in. I need some more motivation to paint things these days.
What happens with trades though?

As far as trades go, I'd count it like a purchase if my backlog grows but if you are trading on 1:1 basis, then no problem.

I loved being part of the old Backlog reduction oath last time it was up and running. My circumstances are very different now as I rarely get chance to paint my own models. My backlog is disgusting lol.

I would love to with at least 300 to do but I fear that time would never allow me to get through these in the way I would like.
I'm tending to do dioramas only these days so that makes it even longer for me to clear the backlog. Maybe I will have to do some dioramas using masses of figures.

There's no minimum to how many you have to paint in a year, just paint before you buy!
