From GW - The Ultimate WARHAMMER magazine - White Dwarf relaunches as a monthly magazine in September.

Found this rather amusing as I had just returned from a used book store where I had bought 10 old White Dwarfs for $5. Saw that some of them had Lord of the Rings on the spines so thought I would give them a try.

One of the issues I bought for 50 cents: WD318, July 2006 where they had these LOTR articles:

Wood Elves - how to use them effectively.

Lair of the Spider Queen - modeling workshop on how to build a game board based on the Lair of the Spider Queen from the Fall of the Necromancer book. Includes how to make trees and modify spiders into different stances.

Warhost Showcase - Dol Amroth Warhost.

Vanguard of Mordor - Converting and Painting Mordor Trolls.

Visions of Dol Guldur - converting Erestor and Glorfindel, converting Castellans and building a themed diorama.

This issue also had excellent hobby articles for Warhammer and Warhammer 40k.

Wonder how the new White Dwarf will compare.

Yeah, looks like gw is reversing many of its mistakes of ego. They cancelled specialist games, allowed lotr models to go obsolete, switched to finecast, and made wd from an expensive catalog to a more expensive weekly catalog.. and hate grew to unimaginable heights.

Now, specialist games are back. Lotr is rebooted. Finecast is replaced with forge world resins, and they are returning to a monthly magazine. Huh....if they had only listened to the fans two years ago they would have stayed on course if profit.

I am happy for them making the effort. I do hope that the articles come back, conversions, tactics, scenery and game info added to the new release info was a genuinely great magazine. I would happily buy it again if it had all that stuff.

I echo that - I'd be up for buying this again if it goes back to something of what it used to be and if we see some hobbit in it.

Isn't the new LotR stuff supposed to come out in September (or thereabouts)? This would be the perfect way to advertise it, "new" magazine launching that is hopefully larger than the current ones, and they can heavily promote LotR in it.

I actually liked the weekly magazine. I only bought the ones I wanted, which were only about a dozen, and if it turned out to suck, I was only out 4$. I cut the articles I wanted on painting out and recycled the rest.

Very exciting times for sure.
Spent the last year or so slowly building my back log of White Dwarfs.
They were all in the Dollar Rack at my LFGS.
Many of those back issues are still relevant to the hobby today.
With the better photographic technology available now, I expect good things.

I cut all of the LOTR articles out of my White Dwarfs and put them in those clear page protectors and stored them in 3 ring binders.
One for each film.

It's been a good long time since they had anything useful in WD.
They should bring back Black Gobbo.

Nevinsrip,
No regrets?
I keep thinking I'll do this, but have yet to pull the trigger!

"Lair of the Spider Queen - modeling workshop on how to build a game board based on the Lair of the Spider Queen from the Fall of the Necromancer book. Includes how to make trees and modify spiders into different stances."

"Vanguard of Mordor - Converting and Painting Mordor Trolls."

For those of us without the issue, could you explain what the conversions looked like please?

"Lair of the Spider Queen" - gave four variations on how to change giant spiders, showed where to cut the legs on the models:

Rearing up - bent the back legs to tilt the whole model back into a tall, fighting pose.

Ready to strike - cut and trim the legs to allow the abdomen to touch the ground

Attacking - twist the front legs to create an aggressive stance

Scuttling - reposition all of the spiders legs to raise it higher off the ground.

Making trees was how to use twigs, model railroad trees and gw trees.

Conversion of Mordor trolls was how to use green stuff to sculpt extra armor and create rivets and straps for the armor. Also how to use plasticard to create weapons. Painting was using the old paints and they also showed how distinctive bases added to the overall appearance of the models.

Rangefinder, Nope. No regrets. I was tired of wading through all that Warhammer stuff that I could care less about.
I gave all the cut up issues to a kid who liked WH and he was thrilled.
So, I made 2 people happy.

I need to type up an index. That would really help.

I did this with many of my old White Dwarfs too. I was nervous to begin with but after I made the chop I am glad I did do. It saves acres of shelf space, and as mentioned above you get to keep only the articles that are relevant to you and your gaming needs.

Can you explain the Castellans conversions please?

chiefhugh - The article was converting castellans to represent the scene from the Fall of the Necromancer sourcebook so was very specific to that view. One castellan was converted by only using the head from a castellan and putting it on a raigwraith body with lots of greenstuff adding legs, an arm, a hand, more cape and a plastic card sword. The second castellan was simpler, cutting the sword and right hand off and switching it from right to left and raising the right arm up. Added more cape using greenstuff and because the model was now missing a armored right hand - they cut the right hand off a Necromancer to replace it. Because we all have a spare Necromancer around that we can cut the right hand off of. :-)

White dwarf returns tomorrow, and I was wondering whether anyone knew if there would be a section for hobbit or middle earth like the good ol' days?

Got mine yesterday and no sign of it yet but I'm sure once it gets it's official re-launch it will reappear.
