And I note they now are no longer making reference to limited availability too.

That's interesting. I don't know if they will sell that many Smaugs again. I think that there are not a lot people who want to own one but weren't able to order it. The first wave was bought by the collectors and the really passionate players. The second wave was bought by all people who really wanted him but were too late. I don't think that a lot people missed wave one and two.
However, I also didn't expect that Smaug will be sold out that fast, so I could be wrong (I hope so because this would show GW that there is still a lot of Hobbit support).

Oh there will be plenty that sell. The rate at which they sold out the previous releases indicates a pretty good sized demand.

Its crazy to think they've made $500,000 (before expenses) off one model already

Well, after I get my taxes back and this being an extra pay period month, I only have some minor car work to have done and I will be ordering... I want elves as first priority, but if I can fine Smaug through a place with a 20% discount than it is very possible I will order it this time.

Got mine off of ebay from a reputable seller about two weeks ago.
It is a very, very nice model. My one fear was that the wings would be far too thin and fragile, but this turned out not to be the case.
A bit overpriced at $490, but for a collector like me it was a must have.
It will be a few years before I assemble and paint it though. the backlog is just to great at the moment.

I just cant believe no matter how much someone loves this hobby they'd spend $500 on a dragon that will just sit on your mantle when you could buy a nice statue of it.

Obviously the part of painting is fun for some but I think that doesnt include that many people.

I think it would be funny to see some of the worst painted Smaugs in the world for that price tag.
