Billy Connolly has been cast as Dain Ironfoot. I'm pretty sure that he's died in every movie that he's been in (least ways every one that I've seen), so he gets to play someone who survives! Unless PJ decides to make him like Haldir, expand his role and then kill him.

I was hoping that Brian Blessed would get the role.

Interesting, I've never thought of Dain as comedic but I cant really say until i've seen the film. And yeah i think he does die in practically all of his films.

Ah fantastic news! I love Billy Connolly. Although he is extremely funny he can be very serious in some films. I think he'll be the perfect Scottish actor for the Hobbit!.

Actually, I think Brian Blessed would make a perfect Forlong the Fat rather than Dain Ironfoot lol.

Ah! See this is what a fine cast is supposed to be!
I like him, depends a lot on all the props and that of course, but he's great!

Thats a really good point, I guess it applies to Thranduil, Radagast and Balin too. Any others people can think of?

Particular the Necromancer and Giant Spiders

Also the Wood Elves., Dwarf Warriors, Misty Mountyains Orc/Goblins, (and, if Del Torro was directing Wargs, but I believe Jackson won't change them.)

sounds great!!
really fits in with the story as well because the hobbit was a much less dark and serious book than lord of the rings

good decision to be dain as well, i cant think of a better dwarf for him to be

actually, i really hope GW make a new king dain model that looks like billy connoly a lot, that would just be amazing and i would love to paint it.

also now i have read some of the hobbit i think that billy would probably be fantastic as any of the dwarfs, the hobbit seems a much more laid back sort of story than LOTR

Oh and Draugluin, if they killed Dain in the Hobbit, how would he die in LotR at the hands of those Easterlings?

Well, Haldir wasn't supposed to die, so we have no idea what PJ is gonna do.

Haldir was never mentioned outside of Lorien though, so his death wouldn't have bungled up any future story...

Dain wasn't mentioned in LotR (the films). His death wouldn't have any affect on the story.

True, but after the Company leaves Lorien, Haldir wasn't mentioned in the books, either. If it weren't for his extended appearance in the films, I'd be inclined to say that few people would remember or care about him. Not so with Dain Ironfoot.

The Big Yin was alive and well at the end of 'Water' and 'Timeline' - hardly two well known films but there you go. He appeared in a very funny tv special called 'Down among the Big Boys', set in Glasgow (where else?) where he is a criminal mastermind whose daughter is marrying a policeman... very very funny in places though some of you might have a wee bit of trouble with the more incomprehensible Glaswegian idioms.
