Personal Gallery of Grimhelm of Snowbourn
This is a neat little diorama originally inspired by an earlier picture in my gallery (Dec 31, 2005), which had Gondorians "building" a warship. In this new one, the layout of the ship's ribs is based on historical artwork of shipbuilding under Francesco Pizarro.

The tents and pavillion from the workmen's camp were made for an article of the Tengwar Beacon. The small ship model on the table represents the 3D plans often used by architects during the Middle Ages. I would consider this my first diorama This is my Elf ship, the "Alquacírel" (Quenya "Ship of the Starry Swan"), which I finished in May. It was originally made at the request of Bolg and Turin Turumbar, to be a ship smaller than my previous Pelargir warship. It follows the "cog" design, and could double as a ship of Lindon or Dol Amroth.

For my terrain entry in the 2007 OR Awards, I added icebergs out of sculpted polystyrene, to add the setting of the ship that famously sank in the Ice-bay of Forochel, in 1975 Third Age. This shows most of the ship's crew and armament, some of which can be seen in more detail in other parts of my gallery. I only got my ship back recently, so I thought a combined picture would be nice. There are 16 Pelargir Marines (using Warriors of Numenor), a Wounded Marine, a Bolt-thrower and Lord of Pelargir with falcon. In the right background is the Weapon Rack, the apple crate is in the midground, with a tender loaded with wood-piles in the foreground.

This is one my ship's tenders. It's name is The Adunaic (after the language of the Numenoreans). At 7" long and 2" wide, it holds a maximum of 7 models. Here it is shown with a ballista, crate of apples and wood-piles. In games, it can be used as a mobile assault boat, supply boat, or "demolition ship" (a boat filled with wood and set alight to burn the enemy fleet). My warship's weapon rack! This consists of a rope (made of a piece of string) and five Gondorian spears on a balsa frame. Only one of the spears is a real plastic model - the rest are all converted from paperclips given Greenstuff. Guess which is the real one. ;) This is my second ever conversion - a wounded Warden of Pelargir. The green sleeves show loyalty to the "green" fiefdom of Lebinnin (of which Pelargir was the capital), while the (navy) blue cloaks show their connection to the marine/naval branch of the army. Of course, this can also double as a wounded Numenorean, as it was converted using a Warrior of Numenor ;)

This lord of Pelargir was converted using a Warrior of Numenor and Radagast's bird, painted to look like a falcon (specifically, a Saker-Goshawk hybrid). The bow is painted to look like a yew longbow - what the "Yeomanry" (archers aboard a ship) were named after. The eyes came out exceptionally well on both the falconer and the falcon, and the bird makes this one of my best miniatures yet.
To see my house rules for this model, go to: http://www.one-ring.co.uk/phpBB2/competition_article.php?entry_id=233 This is my Gondorian "Great Ship", the "Aerossel" - a carrack from the Ports of Pelargir. At 30" in length, it can hold approximately 120 miniatures. Having finished it in May, I plan to enter it in the One Ring Awards. I've also written an article on how to build it - http://www.one-ring.co.uk/phpBB2/kb.php?mode=article&k=383 - please rate it! :) This is my almost complete Gondorian ship. As you can see, the edge of the ship has been painted Regal Blue, and two lanterns are hanging from the masts. It is fully painted except for some details on the figurehead and the aft, and the only major thing I have left to do is the sails. These will each have the Tree of Gondor painted on them in silver, as per the style of the shields on the Warriors of Numenor.

The planking on this ship is now finished, leaving only a few minor details before it gets painted. This is the fully planked lower deck of my Gondorian ship. My ship would need a lot of food and provisions in the hold for it's large crew. Obviously my ship can't show this because it is just what is above the water-line, but the deep curving hull of this type of ship would often have had a brick firebox for cooking. To allude to the cooking going on below deck, I have made this grill out of balsa (to let out the smoke from the firebox), and used a Moria trapdoor to show that my ship has a large hold. This is the completed Maeglin on foot miniature for the Fall of Gondolin. Unfortunately, while I like the finished effect of the shield, I don't think it came out as well as the original Mounted Maeglin.

This is the Maeglen conversion I made for the Fall of Gondolin Supplement, and entered in the One Ring Awards. It could also be used to represent an Elf Cavalry Captain, or Salgant of Gondolin. In my opinion, Mordor War Catapults are overpriced, annyoing to assemble, and more fun and rewarding to improvise! Subtracting the price of the Troll, making this Catapult out of balsa costs no more than a fifth of the cost of buying one in the shop, even when you convert unique Orc crew. This is a frontal view of the planking on the forecastle. At this point the ship is starting to take shape.

This is the planked forecastle, including a wooden staircase. The next part will be planking the lower deck This is a picture of some High Elf bowmen defending a woodland ruin I made. This is a close-up of a caravel of Pelargir, including crew for operating the Bolt Thrower, Wardens for boarding enemy vessels, and converted sailors for manning the port's proud fleet. All that needs to be done now is planking the model's hull.

This is a side-view of the ship I am working one, complete and ready for planking. This is a picture of the deck during the construction of a large war-caravel of Pelargir. Note the Bolt Thrower - an invaluable addition to any warship's artillery store. This is a converted Elf spearman on an armoured horse for the Fall of Gondolin Supplement.
